9 | Friday, N ovem ber 2 5 , 2 0 1 6 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTO N.com Salvation Army's $115K kettle drive continued from p.8 the kettle drive help fund the Salvation Army' s community and family services and food bank for the year, as well as its Christmas programs. Last year, the local church assisted 394 families and nearly 500 children, Robinson said, despite experiencing a shortfall of about $8,000. "As we look forward to supporting the needs in the community, we have seen a rise in the number of new families and individuals so we anticipate w e'll need additional funds to support the increase in assistance needed in Oakville." Robinson stressed how important volunteer support is to a successful campaign. To sign up, contact Drew Arnold at 647-534-0611. "I'd certainly encourage anybody who would like the opportunity of sharing with those in need," said long-time Oakville resident Joan Ford, who began volunteering with the kettle campaign nine years ago, staffing the South Oakville Centre location. For years, she and her husband, Paul, worked at the location. She also encouraged fellow St. Paul' s United Church members to get involved. "It' s a way of giving back," said the 78-yearold. "I' ve always had a lot of respect for the Salvation Army and their work.... I trust them to make good use of the money and put where it is needed." Ford added it' s been rewarding meeting people and hearing why they donate. "One man said to us, with tears in his eyes, `It was the Salvation Army that got me back together with my boy; I had lost touch with my son and they found him for me.' I remember one lady said, `My father would never forgive me if I didn' t donate to the Salvation Army kettle because the Salvation Army was such a blessing to him when he was overseas in the war. So, stories like that keep you going." Ford added it was also a joy to see children excited about dropping off change. Meanwhile, the official kick-off of the kettle drive at RioCan Oakville Place is on the lower level near Santa Claus Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 1 p.m. Donations, by mail or in person, are welcome at The Salvation Army of Oakville, 1225 Rebecca St., Oakville, ON, L5L 1Z1, MondayFriday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Donations by credit card can be made at 905-827-5324, ext. 24.
