www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, November 25, 2016 | 18 Award recipients find it in themselves to help others continued from p.14 "We have to be at peace with ourselves and sometimes that's a struggle because we forget," he said. "We get so caught up and busy with things that we forget to honour ourselves and respect ourselves." We are also responsible for our families, our community and all our relations -- to Mother Earth, Paquette added. The highlight of the event, however, was the awarding of YMCA Peace Medallions. Each year, Peace Medals are handed out to a youth, an adult and a group who, without any special resources, demonstrates a commitment to peace through individual contributions made within their local, national or global community. "The YMCA Peace Medal is a symbol of peace, but it's also so much more," YMCA of Oakville President and CEO Kyle Barber said. "It's a reminder a more peaceful world is possible, if we choose to have hope, if we choose to have empathy and we choose to have respect for each other's differences," said Barber. In looking at the 2016 YMCA Peace Medal nominees, who included five youths, four adults and two groups, Shaen said he felt hopeful that "peace is possible despite the turbulent global landscape that surrounds us. "I feel hopeful more people around the world will come together instead of drifting apart. That there will be harmony instead of havoc and calm instead of conflict...." Youth Peace Medallion Victoria Winslow, an Oakville Trafalgar High School student, was the winner of the YMCA Peace Medallion in the youth category. In the past seven years, the Grade 12 student has helped build two schools, bought more than 50 goats for families in Kenya, and has helped build water wells in developing countries. Winslow has also helped at the local level, organizing food drives, participating in numerous events to help raise money for cancer and helping run mental health and anti-bullying campaigns. In accepting the recognition, which comes with a $500 bursary to be used towards charitable work, Winslow shared the surprise and honour she felt to be the recipient of a Peace Medal. "I was always a really quiet student growing up, so it kind of shows that the quiet people can be heard," Winslow told the Oakville Beaver. She was inspired in Grade 6 to make a difference after learning about Free The Children (now, WE Charity), a worldwide development charity and youth empowerment movement founded in 1995 by human rights advocates Craig Kielburger and Marc Kielburger. "I have a passion for helping others in any way I can because I believe I have a voice and because I'm able to speak out about issues others may face, I should," she said, noting others may not be fortunate enough to be in a position that she is. Group Peace Medallion Resiliency 4 Recovery (R4R) received a YMCA Peace Medallion in the group category for its work in supporting those ages 1629 with mental health or substance abuse challenges. The youth-led support group focuses on inclusiveness, positive recovery, social supports, safe places, expanding life-skills, strength-based recovery and the building of resiliency and more. Oakville resident and R4R member Michelle Demelo accepted the medal on behalf of the group, which meets weekly. Demelo described how R4R has been working to become "positive agents of change and hope in the community." see Medallion on p.19 EXCLUSIVE SNOWBIRD OFFERS n n n n Roundtrip Air* First Class Air Upgrade* for $499 FREE Pre-Paid Gratuities Up to $4,200 Shipboard Credit or up to 42 Shore Excursions Valid on Veranda Staterooms and above.
