Medallion recipients' work provides hope for future continued from p.18 "In helping others, we help ourselves," Demelo said, noting how the group members have built a raised community garden, meditative garden and hosted community events, such as a barbecue and yoga sessions at the community garden. In the last year, R4R has also worked on a community kitchen project to address food security and teach cost-saving skills to those who live on a low-income in Oakville. Annually, it also hosts an event in Oakville on International Overdose Awareness Day (Aug. 31). Demelo added the group lives by a quote from cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead. "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has," she said, quoting Mead. Demelo told the Beaver how honoured the group felt to raise awareness about the issues it cares about. "I think it's really important that a group that has to do with mental health and addictionrelated issues got some recognition," Demelo said. "It's such a huge issue in the community and I feel like Oakville likes to shut it out a little bit sometimes, but it's changing and it's slowly getting talked about more and more." Resiliency 4 Recovery (R4R) Michelle Demelo such as the Student Success Program to support in/at-risk students. The program involves student-success programming, transitions for youths, strategies and steps for re-engagement and support and studentsuccess planning for individual students. In accepting the Peace Medal, she said what an honour it was to be among so many people in the Oakville community who are making a difference. "My work as a secondary school administrator gives me the opportunity to work with youths every day and it's my great hope that each and every one of them gets the opportunity to connect to their community so that they're able to grow their own individual self-worth and see their purpose in the world to make a difference because they are not the leaders tomorrow, they are in fact, the leaders of today," she said.
