17 | Friday, November 4, 2 0 1 6 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Science Centre chief science officer dubs Mogus a young innovator continued from p.13 online by visiting www.OntarioScienceCentre.ca/ InnovationAward. In a three-minute film, Mogus describes her invention and how she was looking for a way to help a friend who has Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a neurodegenerative disease that attacks nerve cells responsible for controlling muscles, when she created TiC. ALS leads to a loss of mobility, loss of speech and eventually impacts the ability to breathe. She was also inspired by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which calls for research, development and support of all types of assistive technologies with an emphasis on affordable devices. With a love of science and innovation, she set out to create an affordable device that would enable those with physical impairments to communicate freely and effectively online. The result was a $10 non-invasive tongue-operated, customized and programmable USB-HID (Human Interface Device) keyboard with interface circuitry. The prototype consists of a mouth guard, similar to an athletes, with five pressure sensitive switches across the front that correspond to the arrow keys and mouse of a keyboard. Mogus said shes honoured to have her work recognized by the Ontario Science Centre. "To me the best thing about science is knowing that my ideas can have an impact on a global scale," she said in a media release. Mogus did extensive research at the library and online to create TiC. She also talked to experts. She believes the device will not only help individuals with spinal cord injuries, but people with multiple sclerosis or other paralyzing conditions as well. The award, she says, will give her opportunity to further develop TiC and ensure it assists those who would benefit most from its use. Ontario Science Centre CEO and Chief Science Officer Dr. Maurice Bitran said Mogus' "ingenuity, skill and dedication to developing an original solution for an issue that, in spite of many scientific advances, continues to affect many people" is truly inspiring. "We look forward to seeing what this young innovator will develop next to continue improving the world around her," he said. -- withfiles from Tim Whitnell The 2 0 1 6 Weston Youth Innovation Award Winner, Emma Mogus, centre, with Dr. Maurice Bitran, left, CEO and Chief Science Officer, Ontario Science Centre, and Eliza Mitchell, right, from The W Garfield Weston Foundation. | submitted photo EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR ED THYROID 15% O FF L HEATED BIRD BATHS AND BATH HEATERS On now u n til N ovem ber ' Free In fo rm a tio n a l H ealth Session Featured Speaker: Dr. Sebastian Guarnaccia As a result of his commitment and dedication for the past 19 years, Dr Guarnaccia has enhanced the quality of 100's of individuals' lives and alleviated their chronic conditions naturally.
