"If residents haven't been able to receive the flu shot yet, it' s important to know that it' s not too late," stated Dr. Hamidah Meghani, Halton Region' s Medical Officer of Health in a media release issued Nov. 28. "To help protect people from the flu and its complications, we recommend everyone over six months of age, especially young children, the elderly, pregnant women and individuals with chronic diseases, receive the flu vaccine," she said. "With the vaccine available at so many different locations throughout the community, it' s easier than ever to work your flu shot into your daily routine," stated Meghani. Halton Region is hosting its last regularly scheduled influenza (flu) immunization clinic on Thursday, Dec. 8 from 4-8 p.m. at Corpus Christi Catholic Secondary School, 5150 Upper Middle Rd., Burlington. Residents can also get immunized at a number of pharmacies, walk-in clinics and doctors' offices across Halton. Vaccination is the best defence against the flu, Halton Region states. Other preventative measures include coughing and sneezing into your sleeve, washing your hands with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer and staying home if you are sick. Families with children under nine years of age who require a second dose of flu vaccine, if this was his or her first flu vaccination, should visit halton.ca/flu or dial 311 for information on where to get the second dose.
