Abigail Leinweber, Madeline Schizas and Natalie Walker, all 13, are headed to Canada's national hgure skating semihnal. Leinweber, who will compete in the pre-novice category, qualihed through the recent Central Ontario Sectionals and hopes to end up in the top 10 in the country. "I have been working on m y per formance skills all year," she said. "This will be my opportunity to re ally impress the judges." Schizas and Walker will both compete in the novice category. The top 18 skaters in their group of 6 0 will then progress on to the Canadian Tire National Figure Skating Championships in Ottawa in January. Both girls plan to be there. "I would love to have my first shot at nationals" said Schizas, who plans a technically-difficult pro gram including four triple jumps. Walker, who won a bronze med al at the recent Central Ontario Sectionals, echoes her teammate's sentiments. "W e have been training hard," she said, "and now I am just Hornets fire 4 0 shots in vain vs. Lightning Brooke Jovanovich scored with 1:09 remaining in the game to pull the Oakville Hornets within a goal of Durham West, but the Light ning held on for a 2-1 win in Pro vincial W omen's Hockey League action last Sunday in Ajax. The junior teams face some big challenges throughout the day before defeating Newton's Grove School by one point in the Tier 2 championship. The senior team scored 59 points throughout the day in Tier 1 play, allowing only 12 points. OCS defeated Mentor 7-4 in the championship game. Earlier this year, Schizas and Walk er were named as two of the top 10 skaters in the country by Skate Can ada and were included in the `Next Gen' pool of those being watched for international competitions. V-ball officiating clinics Halton residents interested in a volleyball officiating certification clinic can attend upcoming clinics in Burlington and Hamilton. The theory clinic will be held on Saturday, Dec. 3 at Burlington's Haber Recreation Centre while the practical session will be held at Hillfield Strathallan College in Hamilton on Saturday, Dec. 17.
