Participants and volunteers, especially, have helped "get it to the next level," Trent said. "There are so many people... they bring to it things we don't necessarily have the capacity to fulfill and because they're so passionate about the event, they help fulfill it," said Trent. "It's not just about us, it's about the number of volunteers that come through." Last year's edition attracted approximately 800 dippers while the upcoming dip is expected to draw about 1,000 people. It' s common for a dip to have somewhere between 700 to 800 participants, Trent noted. "We'll always have a large number in that vicinity. Weather will play a part on the day it falls on. Next year, I hope, and anticipate, the numbers will be larger," said Trent. Even though the Courage Polar Bear Dip is an Oakville staple, not everyone has taken the plunge. Todd and Trent have advice for those running in for the first time on Jan. 1. For example, they advise people to bring water or running shoes, not flip-flops, and have a spotter onshore with a warm blanket or anything that will help restore body temperature once they exit the lake. You get your feet warm and your body follows. You really feel the pain in your feet if they've been submerged (in water) and you don't do anything about it. Once you warm up those feet, everything feels better. Todd Courage The m ost important thing to remember is your feet get "really, really cold" in the water, Todd said, so dippers will need to remove their shoes immediately upon getting to shore and replace them with warm boots.
