The organization recently held a press conference to announce the upcoming performance, Creative Oakville-Respon Night, a tide, which reflects its purpose and its sponsor, respectively The event will be held Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017 at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts. Founded in 2013, OCN is a not-for-profit organization serving the Chinese communities in Oakville and Halton. It encourages Chinese-speaking residents to get involved locally in social activities and cultural traditions. "This year, we want to get more Oakville people to be involved in the show. Through our daily lives, we communicate and support each other more. We want to contribute more to the Oakville community," said Ti Chen, show director and OCN board member. The performance will be community-based as a way to "make Oakville better," he said. "We contribute a lot to the Oakville community. This is the fourth year we have had a Chinese celebration show," said Chen. Its first presentation, I Wish, referred to the community wanting a better life in Oakville. Last year, through the show, we donated more than $5,000 to the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital," said Chen. The Jan. 7 show will bring "creative ideas" to the stage because OCN wants to create something unique, Chen said. For example, there will be a few children on stage to tell a story through song and dance. Approximately 150 performers will be involved in Creative Oakville . "Through songs and dances, we can really express our ideas, our thoughts. It' s not only a song and a dance. This year, we have sea stories. We have sea creatures," said Chen. OCN president Rena Tu said all the performers reside in Oakville, which is what Creative Oaltville alludes to. It is comprised of people of different age and ethnic groups, as well. "We really look forward to our show," Tu said, noting Respon Night refers to its title sponsor, Respon International Wealth Corporation. "Respon has been very supportive of the Oakville Chinese Network." Since the OCN was created, it has had an "active presence" in the Oakville Chinese community, Tu said, noting its three formal groups -- Green Oak Seniors Club, Sunshine Path Youth Empowerment Group and Sixteen Mile Creek Theatre Troupe. "We're helping the newcomers and Chinese people living in the Oakville community to get together to help each other and support each other," said Tu, noting the OCN has helped at least f,000 Chinese residents get access to its services. While Creative Oalrville isn't a charity show, as was the case with O CN ' s previous efforts, funds from the upcoming function will support the network and its three programs, Tu said, as it plans on expanding in the future. "Maybe next year, we will think about doing another charity show," said Lu.
