All the w orks are either waterco lours or prints that have been hidden away in cupboards for years." Johnson winnerofEvergreenAward Author and former Oakville resident Plum Johnson was recently announced the winner of the Forest of Reading 2016 Evergreen Award. The recognition was for Johnson's They Left Us Everything , a memoir about the importance of preserving family his tory to help make sense of the past and nurture family bonds to safeguard the future. "I'm so thrilled to receive the Forest of Reading Evergreen Award for m y mem oir, They Left Us Everything," Johnson said in a media release. "Libraries have been m y source of inspiration and en couragement since I was young." Ontario readers participated in the Ev ergreen Award program through book clubs, public libraries and other commu nity forums. After months of reading the best in Ca nadian fiction and non-fiction for adults, readers from more than 100 Ontario li braries chose Johnson' s memoir. A committee of library professionals select the titles nominated for the Ever green Award, which are announced every January, while votes are tallied for the award in late October. The reading program is de signed for adults and comprised of the best titles in Canadian fic tion and non Plum Johnson fiction. It is one of eight pro grams that form the Forest of Reading, Canada's largest recreational reading pro gram of its kind, according to the release. "We're excited to welcome Plum John son to the circle of Evergreen Award winners. They Left Us Everything struck a chord with the Evergreen Selection Committee, and we're glad to see it re sounded with Evergreen readers," said Kathryn Lee, chair of the Evergreen Award Steering and Selection Commit tee, in the release. "The committee found They Left Us Everything to be a fascinating memoir that reminds us of the stories attached to our belongings." Johnson will accept her Evergreen Award at the Ontario Library Associa tion' s annual Super Conference, Feb 1-4, 2017, at the Metro Toronto Con vention Centre.
