Change by YOUth delivers Christmas Eve breakfast to KSM by Nathan Howes Oakville Beaver Staff group of Oakville youths will be bringing tidings of good cheer -- and food -- to those in need on Christmas Eve, Saturday, Dec. 24. Change by YOUth, a teen-driven, non profit organization that promotes youth empowerment, development and leadership through philanthropic opportunities, will be preparing a holiday breakfast for 100 people at Kerr Street Mission (KSM) tomorrow. From 8-11:30 a.m., 15-20 volunteers from the youth group will be cooking and serving various foods and beverages, including sausages, toast/French toast, fruits, vegetables, bagels, eggs, gourmet desserts and orange juice, among others. "Even on Christmas Eve, people are still struggling to find food and nutrition. Its very important on that day to really give back and help others," said Jack Mogus, 16, group founder. The thought behind Saturdays breakfast goes back more than two years, Mogus explained, as he began volunteering at a younger age, with his siblings, with the Oakville Leo Club. He wanted to help put food on people' s tables. "When I was younger, I didn't know there were people in need in Oakville. I didn't realize there were people who actually needed the support, especially with putting food on the table," said Mogus. There are children in need in Oakville who need the food." Mogus told the Oakville Beaver what makes the breakfast "really epic" is the fact Change by YOUth has many individuals from diverse backgrounds and religions taking part. "It will be all youths, from ages eight to 18, preparing, cooking and serving breakfast to 100 disadvantaged people in our community," said Mogus. "They're helping to give those less fortunate in our community a beautiful Christmas Eve breakfast." In November, a team of Change by YOUth members put together 100 holiday loot treat bags, which will be distributed Saturday. The group received help from Sobeys, which donated bagels, cream cheese, orange juice and a $50 gift card to the breakfast. "1 bought 200 eggs and gourmet desserts with some money I made working part-time and others have helped out. We still need to purchase the bread, maple syrup," said Mogus. The 16-year-old said the organization wants to ensure everyone feels "really welcomed," noting he' s been cooking meals at KSM since 2013.
