That' s why it is reminding residents of the Crisis Outreach and Support Team (COAST) it runs with the Canadian Mental Health Association Halton Region Branch. The focus is to help those in crisis and people struggling with mental health and/or addiction. "As the days get shorter and the weather gets colder, many people struggle with the change of season and withdraw from regular daily activities," Halton police stated in a media release. "People who live with depression, anxiety, or other health conditions may be met with increased pressures and stressors that can be detrimental to their well-being and in turn affect their family and friends." According to police, during the holiday season, there is a dramatic increase in the number of people who struggle to cope. They may be dealing with depression, anxiety, financial issues, family stress, isolation, social pressures, thoughts of suicide, or other concerns that affect their mental health and wellness. COAST has a 24/7 crisis line that provides Halton residents with support, plans for safety, and healthy coping strategies. The COAST team includes crisis intervention specialists and police officers specially trained M e n ta l H ealth Survival K it Reminders to help you keep it together PIECE OF G U M To rem ind you to stick to it TOOTSIE ROLL To rem ind you not to bite o f f m ore than you can chew DOLLAR To rem ind you to sav e m oney for adventures M IN T To rem ind you to k e ep co o l HERSHEY'S KISS To rem ind you so m eo n e cares ROCKETS To rem ind you that nothing is out o f reach in mental health and crisis intervention. The service is available for people reaching out for help, as well as family, friends, and others looking for guidance and direction on supporting people in their lives. "Don't just brush off feelings of sadness, worry, negativity, or hopelessness this time of year as simply a case of the `winter blues,'" stated the release. "Reach out for support and talk about what you're feeling to make positive changes and prevent it from getting worse. Mental health problems affect people in different ways but no one has to go through it alone. COAST is always there to help." As part of a campaign, COAST has released a Mental Health Survival Kit poster to help residents "keep it together." It lists items to keep around as reminders, including a: · piece of gum -- to remind you to stick to it; · Tootsie Roll -- to remind you not to bite off more than you can chew; · dollar -- to remind you to save money for adventures; · mint -- to remind you to keep cool; · Hershey' s Kiss -- to remind you someone cares; · roll of Rockets Candy -- to remind you nothing is out of reach.
