Zeron is one of the two final ists for Standardbred Canada' s O'Brien Award of Horsemanship. Zeron drove 116 winners with more than $ 2 .6-million in purse winnings this year. The 59-yearold also notched career win No. 8 ,0 0 0 as he took Dixie Lullaby to the winner' s circle at Mohawk Raceway in August. Zeron also trained 49 winners to $1.7-m illion in earnings. Two of the horses he co-owns and trains are also up for O'Brien Awards. Shamballa is a finalist for the Older Pacing Horse award and Mass Production is up for TwoYear-Old Colt Trotter honours. His competition in the latter is Seven and Seven, co-owned by Oakville' s Allan Smith. Travis Cullen, the other finalists for the horsemanship award, was a nominee last year; Zeron won it in 2010. Oakville's Brianne Jenner of the Calgary Inferno and Christina Kessler, Carlee Campbell (Eusepi) and Burlington' s Renata Fast of the Toronto Furies will play in the Feb. 11 game at the Air Canada Centre. Jenner is ninth in league scor ing with six goals and six assists in 10 games and ranks fourth in the league with 1.20 points per game. The CW HL player for the month of November picked up three assists this week as she helped Canada earn a two-game sweep of the Unit ed States in the December Series. Campbell leads all rookie de fencemen in scoring with a goal and seven assists in 16 games for the Furies. Campbell, who gradu ated from Clarkson University in 20 1 0 , has proven to be a steal for the Furies, who selected her in the 11th round of the CW HL draft. She was a three-time Eastern Col lege Athletic Conference all-star with the Golden Knights and was named the conference' s best defen sive defenceman during her senior year. Kessler has posted a 2 .2 4 goalsagainst average with the Furies this season and ranks third in the league with four wins. Kessler posted a 32-save shutout against Brampton in October and has a . 919 save percentage. The 2 01 4 Clarkson Cup MVP will be play ing in the all-star game for the third straight year. Fast, another Furies' blueliner, ranks fourth among rookie de fencemen with two goals and five points in 14 games. Fast also played at Clarkson, where she helped the Golden Knights win their first NCAA championship, earning a spot on the Frozen Four all-tournament team. The second overall pick in the draft represented Canada at the Four Nations Cup in November and will suit up for Canada' s devel opment team at the Nations Cup in Germany in January. Two captains will be named and teams will be drafted the night be fore the all-star game. Annual Bell hockey tourney has 1 4 divisions, 1 2 0 team s The Richard Bell Memorial Tourna ment, Oakville's annual minor-age group hockey event, starts Tuesday, Dec. 27. The four-day tournament fea tures 120 teams, including four squads from Finland. Tournament champions will be decided in 14 divisions, including four in the minor atom and minor peewee divisions (AAA, AA, A, AE) and three in the minor bantam (AAA, AA, A) and minor midget (AA, A, A E) divisions. All finals are scheduled for Six teen Mile Sports Complex on either Thursday, Dec. 29 or Friday, Dec. 30. Ingredients 1/2 cup butter, softened 1/2 cup shortening 1 1/2 cups white sugar 2 e ggs 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 2 3/4 cups whole wheat flour 2 teaspoons cream of tartar 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons white sugar 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon United Way Oakville !...... ................ ................................... Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C) Cream together butter, shortening, 1 1/2 cups sugar, eggs and vanilla. Blend in the flour, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt. Shape dough from rounded spoonfuls into balls. Mix 2 tablespoons of sugar and cinnamon . Roll balls of dough in mixture of sugar and cinnamon. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets. Bake 8 to 10 minutes, or until cookies are set, but not too hard. Remove immediately from baking sheets. Most importantly... enjoy!
