That's what about 200 people heard Thursday as the Oakville and District Labour Council and Canadian Autoworkers' Union (CAW) Locals 707 and 1256 hosted an all-candidates meet ing at the Galaxy Club -- the CAWs local home. Issues ranged from scrapping the North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), child poverty, and minimum wage, to affordable housing, child care, and health care. Candidates were asked what they drive in connection to a question about slap ping tariffs on imported vehicles to even the playing field for North Americanmade vehicles. Far more Asian-made vehicles are sold in Canada than Canadian-made vehicles sold in places like Korea. "I agree it' s getting ridiculous," said Brown, who added, however, that the cul ture in Korea is that to buy anything other than a Korean-made vehicle is con sidered unpatriotic. OOPS: stronger access to the market there's no guarantee the culture would change. I think we have to buy more of our own cars," said Brown. Young said he's always been a big sup porter of Ford, he drives Fords, has sold Fords and worked at Ford after university. However, Young cautioned tariffs on one sector could lead to tariffs against Canadian products in other sectors. Tariffs on landing gear made in Oakville and sold world-wide could result in local job loss, he warned. Challenged on whether they've broken from the party line while campaigning and if they'd do so if elected, Young said he hasn't campaigned for anything that isn't in his party's policy. Brown said she'd always vote according to her word and noted she has broken with the party line on issues that either went against her beliefs or were not in the inter ests of her constituents. Agrell said she wouldn't want to go against the party line, but there may be instances where she'd try to change it. Burlington Green Party candidate Rick Goldring was also at the meeting in place of Oakville Green candidate Laura Domsy, who lives in Midland. She was unable to make the meeting due to work commit ments. Thursday's meeting was well attended and moderator Joey Edwardh, executive director of Community Development Halton, reluctantly left a line-up of more than a dozen people waiting at the micro phone to ask questions when the twohour meeting drew to a close at 9 p.m. · Edwardh posed labour-oriented ques tions to the candidates during the first hour of the meeting and the second hour was opened to questions from the public. Edwardh cautioned at the outset that respect was to be the order of the day, and aside from the occasional heckle, it was the candidates themselves who fired at each other. See B ro w n p a g e 9
