The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday January 21, 2006 - 9 Brown paints bleak picture under Tory rule Continued fro m page 8 Young took direct aim at Brown who defend ed herself, fired her own salvos, to many of which Young said, "Not true," and then really let it fly during her wrap-up. Agrell, while scoring a few hits against the Liberals with comments about pork-barreling and the like, took direct aim at the Conservatives during her concluding com ments framed in a narrative about having "a bad dream." Agrell challenged that a vote for the Conservatives would change the shape of gov ernment, lead to policies benefiting the rich and powerful, foreign policy in lock-step with American policy, a tight squeeze on all pro grams to enable expensive programs promised on the campaign trail, and more. Brown concluded saying, "I feel fairly depressed by tonight's meeting," noting all things wrong with the country had been dis cussed. "There will always be problems, and the Liberals will always take a balanced approach," said Brown, noting a Conservative vote would lead to a tremendous rise in power of the police and a lot more people in jail. "You better lock up your sons because many more will be picked up and put into the crimi nal justice system," said Brown predicting "more action in the streets" in the form of "protest marches against Draconian measures." Conservative promises to address the fiscal imbalance among provinces are "code words for massive money and power shifts to provinces and a significant weakening of the federal gov ernment," said Brown. Young concluded saying the Liberals should be touting their record after a dozen years in office, and said a Conservative vote would mean no more Adscams, safer streets, more shooters in prison, investment in healthcare and post secondary education and standing up for Canada's sovereignty. "Fear does not build a nation, hope does," said Young. When the topic of healthcare took centre stage, much was said of NDP Party Leader Jack Layton attending a private clinic for a hernia. "I went to the same clinic and nobody made a big deal about it, I feel left out," said Goldring. "The healthcare system is near and dear to our heart, unlike Jack Layton's hernia," joked Agrell. Another light moment came when, while discussing anti-Americanism, Young made a comment about George Bush being called a moron and noting, "he' s a human being and he has feelings, too." "Canadian election time is not the time to talk about the Americans. We should talk about our vision for our country, rather than their vision for their country or maybe their vision for the world," said Brown. Asked about enacting a new auto pact, one that would enforce quotas on imports except from Mexico, Agrell said she's wary of quotas and that free trade opened some markets to Canada. Young said he supports fair trade. Brown said NAFTA is in place and another trade agree m ent for one economic sector wouldn't be fair. Young said he wouldn't favour abolishing Canada's participation in NAFTA. Brown said NAFTA has some serious weak nesses that must be monitored. She also said that the Liberals are not against giving notice of Canada's intention to withdraw from NAFTA unless the Americans live up to the $5 billion they owe Canada in regard to the softwood lumber dispute. "Agreements are designed to work both ways," said Agrell, adding she "might support a bit of grandstanding including the threat to withdraw if it would add weight to the cause." Goldring said the Green Party would triple or quadruple taxes on vehicles like Hummers while forgiving GST on bicycles. Agrell and Young both said their parties would honour the $100 million in federal fund ing given to Ford to keep the Oakville plant open and establish a research and development facility. "It's a signed agreement between the com pany and the Government of Canada. Any gov ernment would have to abide by it," said Brown, noting the Liberals "fought very hard to get i t " "If Ford has another need, can you count on the Conservatives to come to your aid? I doubt it," said Brown. "You can count on strategic investments where appropriate in the future," countered S y s te m s JA N U A R YW A R E H O U S EC L E A R A N C EE V E N T !
