The Town of Oakville is trying to help write off impaired driving through an annual essay contest Impaired drivers kill approximately four and injure 190 Canadians every day, according to MADD Canada; which recently moved its headquarters to Oakville. To decrease these statistics -- through awareness -- the Mayor's Special Committee Against Impaired Driving (SCAID) is once again sponsoring its annual essay contest in memory of Janet Dooley, an Oakville resident killed by a drunk driver in 1991. Open to all Oakville students, this year's topic is bicycle and helmet courtesy of the Co-operators Insurance. Students 15 years of age and older are invited to submit a 350-700 word essay to be eligible to win a driver training gift certificate courtesy of Young Drivers of Canada. Winners will be invited to attend a Town Council meeting to read their essays. Mulvale, local councillors and the late Dooley's parents, Stephanie and Bill Dooley, will present the winners with their prizes. Interested students should submit their essay by April 7,2006.
