Ask a sales associate for details. Dogs th at live outdoors, or spend more than 20 minutes outside during inclement weather, should have a prop erly insulated, draft free dog house. The house should be large enough for the dog to move around, but small enough to allow the dog's own body to keep the area warm. A heated water container m ust also be provided to ensure readily available access to fluid. Unheated garages, sheds or decks do not provide suitable shelter for any ani mals. The seemingly warm er retreat offers in herent dangers. Pets th at become lost and seek these dry loca tions for shelter, can become trapped inside. Thirsty animals may choose antifreeze, often found in garages at this time of year, a poisonous drink with deadly results. Cars stored in garages overnight offer a dangerous place for animals to warm up. When getting in your car in the morning tap the hood several times to dislodge any animals that may have crawled up to escape the winter weath er. Many cats sustain life-threatening injuries as a result of taking retreat too close to a fan belt. Walk Smart Walking in a winter wonderland may sound like a good idea, but take precau tion with your dog. Gauge the need to go for a walk, when extreme tem pera tures can pose a risk to your dog's health. Use common sense. Short-haired dogs in particular can benefit from one of the many dog coats or sweaters available on the market. Dog boots may be considered a useful option to help keep away salt and other chemicals that irritate a dog's paws. After going for a walk make sure that you thoroughly dry your dog. Shorter dogs th at have been exposed to the snow may have it clumped to their under belly. Use a towel to absorb the m oisture and give your pet a thorough drying. Don't forget to check the dog's feet. Remove any balls of snow th at may have collected in the sensitive pad area. There's No Place Like Home The safest place for any pet during the winter weather is inside your home. Traffic, angry people and wildlife are just some of the threats to their life that cats face beyond the safety of home. In the winter, nature provides other good reasons to keep your cat indoors. Dogs too need the comforts of home - be it indoors, or in an insulated dog house - to weather the winter. There's no place like home for all animals when the tem peratures get cold and the weather becomes blustery. Preparation now can prevent unnec essary potentially life threatening situa tions for your animal. With common sense and planning your pet will be well-equipped to cope with the cold months ahead. For more information about how you can prepare your pet for winter, please contact your local veterinarian or the Oakville & District Humane Society at 905-845-1551.
