C2 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday May 31 2000 The 8th annual Great Ride `n' Stride fundraising event for cancer research happens at the Glen Abbey Recreation Centre on Sunday, June 4th at 1 p.m. Participants will have the option of walking, running, biking or roller blad ing a distance of 5 km or 10 km. This family-oriented event has spread to 52 locations across Ontario and has over 5,000 annual participants. Last year, over $800,000 was raised. A free barbecue and incentive prizes will be awarded. The top event prize is a one year lease on a 2000 Volkswagen Beetle the winner must have at least $3,000 in pledges. All participants will be eligible to win a mountain bike. Jesus Jubilee at Coronation Park Thousands of Oakville-area Christians are expected to gath er this Saturday, June 3rd, for an artistic celebration of Christian history and Christian unity, involving drama, dance, mime and music. Jesus Jubilee 2000 is being organized by an interdenomina tional group of Oakville's church members in recognition of 2000 years since the birth of Jesus Christ. The 90-minute program will follow the evolution of the Christian church through a con temporary dramatization. The event will also showcase some of the best and most diverse Christian entertainers the Oakville area has to offer. Admission is free. "By reflecting on the events through history, we as Christians, are able to focus on the positive, and sometimes not so positive effect, we have had in the world," says Bruxy Cavey, pastor of Upper Oaks Community Church and co chair of the Jesus Jubilee 2000 organizing committee. "In the end, however, it's all about Jesus, and how we can make his presence known today." Saturday's event will take place from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at Coronation Park, located on Lakeshore Road east of Third Line. A pre-program show will commence at 2 p.m. to entertain those arriving early. There will be parking for the event at sev eral area sites with shuttle buses available to bring spectators to Coronation Park. Parking and shuttle service is available at the Oakville Christian School, 112 Third Line; Hopedale Presbyterian Church, 156 Third Line; Evangel Pentecostal Church, 1450 Rebecca; Hopedale Bible Chapel, 342 Sherin (shuttle at Evangel); Calvary Baptist Church, 1215 Lakeshore W.; St. Hilda's Anglican Church, 1258 Rebecca; Central Baptist Church, Rebecca; St. Thomas Aquinas High School, Rebecca and Dorval (shuttle at Central Baptist). Shuttle buses will be going to Coronation park from 1:30 to 3:15 p.m.; and returning to the parking sites from 4:15 to 6 p.m. People are asked to bring chairs and blankets to sit on while at the event, as permanent seating is limited. Proceeds from a goodwill offering at Jesus Jubilee 2000 will be directed to Kerr Street Ministries, a drop-in support centre, and the Oakville Salvation Army's Lighthouse, a shelter for the homeless.
