D2 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, May 31, 2000 O TM H Classic raises $16,000 The annual Oak-Land Ford Lincoln OTM H 5K Classic on Sunday was a huge hit this year with 436 runners and 186 walkers joining together to raise $16,000. That money will all go towards a new $1-million women's diagnostic centre at OTMH. And for more on that, be sure to read participant Diane Hart's column in this Friday's Beaver. But meanwhile, in today's sports section we pay tribute to all the participants with the complete results. 1 ANDREAS CARLBORG 2 PAUL OSLAND 3 PETER DRAKE 4 ANDY CORMACK 5 KEVIN SMITH 6 MICHAEL GILL 7 EDWARD MCCOLM 8 MIKE DESLAURIEM 9 WALTER FAION 10 DAVID REID HAMILTON OAKVILLE GRIMSBY OAKVILLE OAKVILLE OAKVILLE OAKVILLE TORONTO OAKVILLE TORONTO 1M 2M 3M 4M 5M 6M 7M 8M 9M 10 M 1/14 1/37 2/37 2/14 1/13 1/5 1/39 3/14 2/39 3/37 M25-29 M35-39 M35-39 M25-29 M15-19 M20-24 M40-44 M25-29 M40-44 M35-39 15:29 15:57 16:14 16:23 16:32 16:36 16:42 17:02 17:28 17:28 4:59 5:08 5:14 5:17 5:19 5:21 5:23 5:29 5:38 5:38 Photo by Christine Smyth OTMH CLASSIC: featured 436 runners and 186 walkers and they helped raise $16,000! What a day for the Crusaders Last weekend was as busy as it was pro ductive for the O akville Crusaders rugby club. Having one of its best Saturday's ever, the Crusaders had all five adult teams win their respective aw ay league m atches, including the first team 's 39-20 win over the Toronto Irish, who last year finished atop O ntario's premiere league. On Sunday, three Crusaders sides were all in action at home, and all lost. But no one was com plaining as the victors were touring international sides from the British Isles, and the experience, not to mention the camaraderie, was invaluable. FULL SLATE THIS W EEKEND But before we get into the recap, rugby fans can see the Crusaders in action this Saturday (June 3) with a full slate o f games on the go. The first-15, as usual, are the featured m atch at 3 p.m., entertaining the Bytown Blues from Ottawa. The second and third teams host Ajax W anders at 1:30 p.m. and noon, respective lyThe fo u rth -15 hosts A urora, also at noon. The Crusaders Clubhouse is located on Ninth Line between Upper M iddle and Hwy. 5. FIRST FIFTEEN The Crusaders first-15 had a slow start in their 39-20 win with the Toronto Irish doing m ost of the initial running and their backs looking impressive. However, the Crusader forwards started their complete dominance of the Irish for wards and all through their game had their opponents back pedaling in the scrums and rucks. The tight five were brutal in their workmanlike play which allowed the loose forwards to excel in their play, and ulti mately allowing the backs to outshine their opponents. SECOND FIFTEEN The Crusaders second-15 shutout the Irish-seconds 27-0. It was pleasing to see the Crusaders playing to their full potential to notch their first league win. With improved team work and fewer break downs, the team should prove to be a leader in their division. THIRD FIFTEEN Revenge is sweet and the Crusaders third -15 managed to avenge some of last year's defeats with a 59-3 win. FOURTH FIFTEEN The Crusaders fourth-15 had a solid 365 win over the Nomad-thirds. This young side, with many new faces, will be a force in this division and represents the future of the Crusaders. INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION Last Sunday, the Crusaders entertained three touring teams from the British Isles. (Over-35) In the first game of the day, the Crusaders over-35 team played Brixham Rugby Football Club who are celebrating their 125th anniversary. B rixham 's finest shining hour was in 1978 when 5,000 people watched them host the Cantabrians, from New Zealand, who fielded eight former All-Blacks. This game put Brixham on the rugby playing map. Brixham beat the Crusaders 15 (three tries) to 10 (two tries) in a very close game. It was a hard fought match with both teams having their chances. (First-15) In the second match of the afternoon, the Crusaders played the Middlesbrough Rugby Club. Middlesbrough is a club rich in history and also celebrating their 125th anniversary. Since 1972, the club averages 33 to 37 games per year, and are always quite com petitive. In a very tight m atch, the Crusaders first-15 lost 17 (two converted tries and one penalty) to 14 (two converted tries). Again, the Crusaders had their chances, and this loss proved their game and future are rapidly improving. (U-14) The third match of the day was an U-14 match between the Crusaders and a Welsh side from Treherbert. This match was very one sided in favour of one of the best U-14 teams from Wales. These youngsters have been playing con tact rugby (tackling permitted) since nine years of age. This was the first contact game for the young Crusaders and, although outplayed, were competitive until the last whistle. Fly half Ryley Beddoe and inside centre Katie Zw ir led the team to a 29-0 vic tory. "We opened up with a very clean game," said OTHS head coach Jacquie Pece. "We won the scrums, moved the ball well in the backs and had a lot of support up front when it came tim e for rucking and clearing." Game two saw OTHS han dle longtime boys' rugby rival Nelson easily, posting a 24-0 win. Forwards Naomi Brown and M eg Sheepway helped lead the attack with strong play. The two shutout victories ensured OTHS first place in their bracket. Pearson emerged as the w inner of the other bracket to set up the champi onship game. A strong team effort gave OTHS another 24-0 victory and the Halton championship. "Nobody stood out as a star in the cham pionship gam e," said Pece. "We had a total team effort and played strong in all facets of the game." When the girls take to the pitch for the OFSAA champi onships today, they will meet much stiffer competition. Pece understands that while she's fielding a talented team, they could be short on experience. "Our girls were all beginners at the start of the year," she said. "We played the top team in a tournament earlier in the year, Sacred H eart out of London, and lost only 17-0. They had been beating other teams by 30 points but we held our own. Now, our players are 100 per cent better than they were then, so w e'll see what happens." (See 'OTMH Classic' page D4) TOGETHER THROUGH THICK AND THIN! HAIRCARE THAT KEEPS YOU COMING BACK.
