Wednesday, May 31, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER D3 Sports Scene Oakville's Dave Kantor, a Blakelock grad who went on to star at Queen's University, helped Canada's national vol leyball team, ranked 10th in the world, to a hard fought, two-match sweep over ninth ranked Argentina in Moncton last weekend to open up world volleyball league play. Both matches went to the limit with Canada prevailing 3-2. The 12-country, invite-only world league is considered the most important tourney in the world next to the Olympic Games. Speaking of the Olympic Games, Canada has to win a four team pool at a last chance qualifying tournament in France July 25-27 if it hopes to suit up at the Sydney Olympics in September. Kantor and the Canucks are in Winnipeg this weekend hosting sixth-ranked Yugoslavia on Friday night-and Saturday (the latter game to be broadcast on CBC, as it was last weekend). Domenic Filane's dreams of a third Olympics are on the line as he is with the Canadian boxing team in Argentina this week for a last chance Olympic qualifier involving all of north and south America. The Oakville Coyotes major junior A roller hockey squad have a two-game home stand at Oakville Arena this weekend. They host Brantford on Friday night, 7:30 p.m. and Buffalo on Sunday, 2 p.m. They went 2-2 in action last weekend (see Friday's Beaver). The Northern Football Conference (NFC) is one of the last bastions of senior tackle football in Canada and the Oakville Longhorns will try and keep their dominant ways into the new decade and century. The `Homs are seeking an amazing eighth straight NFC playoff championship as the season gets under way this Saturday (June 3rd). For the second year in a row, unfortu nately, the `Homs have no scheduled games in Oakville and are slated to play all their games out of Burlington's Nelson Stadium (which they played part time out of in pre ceding seasons). The `Homs actually kick off the season with three straight Saturday home games at Nelson field -- June 3rd against Sudbury Spartans, June 10th against North Bay Bulldogs and June 17th against Sudbury Spartans. All league games start at 7 p.m. The league remains at four teams this year with one change -- North Bay Bulldogs which sat out the previous two years replace Markham which has left the league. Markham had reached the champi onship game the three previous years, losing each time to the `Homs. Sheridan College is the venue for the first Can Am ITF Taekwon-Do champi onships. Mike Momingstar, head instructor of Momingstar Taekwon-Do, is the host of this prestigious event that will bring competitors from across Canada and the U.S.A. together for a full day of exciting competition on Saturday, June 10. Some special guests that will attend are Master Choi Jang Hwa, the son of the founder of Taekwon-Do, Master Robert Wheatley from Reno, Nevada, who will also put on a demonstration, Grand Master Hwang Kang Sang from Connecticut and MPP Gary Carr. This promises to be an exciting day not only for the competition but for the demon strations that will take place at 1:30 p.m. Fourth degree, and above, instructors from Canada and the U.S. will perform demonstrations that will include lots of board breaking. The spectator fee is $5 and there will be some door prizes. For more info, contact Momingstar Taekwon-Do at 847-8955 or check out the website donated by Netinstinct at www.itfchampionships.com. O akville team successful in O ntario Cup kick-off The 87th edition of the Ontario Cup kicked off last weekend (May 27/28) with some preliminary round soccer games in just a couple of divisions. The only Oakville team involved met with suc cess. The Oakville Red Devils U-12 boys rep team won their five-team tourney, earning the right to move on to the next round robin action on June 10/11. For the Devils, the tourney basically came down to their third game against their old foes' , North Scarborough Hurricanes. Both teams had won their opening two matches, with Oakville downing Bolton 2-0 and host Barrie 61. And sure enough, the showdown lived up to its billing with Oakville scoring early on a Gavin Russell shot over an advancing goalie and then holding on to earn the close 1-0 shutout. Brandon DeFazio was full measure for the shutout, including a morale breaking second half save off a free kick from 25 feet out that had the inside post labeled. Oakville then took care of business in the final game with a 4-1 verdict over Richmond Hill. Oakville opened the scoring just 40 seconds into the game which may have been too much of a good thing as they hung back, allowing Richmond Hill to even tually even it up. But three goals in a seven minute span blew the game open for Oakville. Cup Scorers: Thomas McLean (2), Tremayne Leach (2), Kyle Oliveira (2), Gavin Russell (2), Chris Haltigin, Jesse Swain, Georgie Vacani, Junior Hoilett, Brandon Blackwood. Explosion settles for win in bronze m edal gam e The O ak ville E xp losion U14 girls rep soccer club had to settle for a convincing bronze medal victory with a 4-0 win over Peterborough City Tigers in the U nionville tourney over the May 27/28 weekend. Pitkin scored the first two. Price Owen blasted one from 25 yards and Tanya Dias converted a cross from Jennifer Pitken with the team 's third headed goal of the weekend. Katarina Vulic played out standing goal, providing tremen dous support as a second sweeper and ably dealing with the few real shots. The Explosion had to settle for a bronze medal match when they were edged 2-1 by Ajax in the sem ifinal match. Jessica Pudwell cooly converted a penal ty shot after Jennifer Pitkin was hauled down in the penalty area to temporarily tie the game at 1- 1. The Explosion kept up the pressure but it was Ajaz that pot ted the winner on a successful penalty shot awarded over a d is puted hand-ball. Oakville went 2-1 in the pre liminary round. They took their loss in the opening game thanks to a poor start which allow ed Aurora to build up an early 1-0 lead which held up. Jessi Povilaitis and Jennifer Pitken scored in a 2-0 win over Peterborough. The offence really got going in a 5-1 win over host Unionville. Goals were scored by Jessy Po, Jennifer Pitkin, Heather Lockhart, J essica Turner and Kathryn Matheson. Ontario Cup cham ps win M illenium Cup in a thrilling final The tw o-tim e defending O ntario Cup cham pion O akville Angels U-14 girls rep team won the Toronto Soccer Association's (TSA) Millennium Cup in a thrilling final against Scarborough United on Monday. It was their second tournament champi onship o f the young season. After coasting through the preliminary round with victories against Dixie 1 - 0, Etobicoke 6 - 1 , and Whitby 4 -1, the U -15 rep team had to overcome Whitby again 1 - 0 in a penalty kick shootout in the semifinal match. In the preliminary round the Angels received goal production from Kara Lang (3), Courtney Cherrett, Megann Vander Vliet, Lauren Glover, Jen Parker, Stefanie DeBoer (2) and Marisa Videc (2). In the semifinal shootout, it was Parker, Lang and Videc who connected. The championship game turned into another shootout, after regulation time and overtime failed to break the scoreless deadlock, and Oakville again prevailed. Keeper Kristine Snedden shutdown Scarborough's shooters with several sparkling saves and the Angels Jen Parker, Kara Lang, Marisa Videc and Stefanie DeBoer responded with four consecutive PK goals for the victory. The defence (anchored by Anderson, Parker, Richards and Haddon) definitely won this for Oakville as Scarborough were the better offensive team on the day. And in particular, defender Stephanie Anderson was the game MVP, as chosen by the opposing coach, for her remarkable job in clos ing down Scarborough's speedy left forward. A truly memorable defensive performance. Hurricane beat Ontario's best in tourney trium ph The O akville H urricane U - l l girls rep soccer team barely made it into the playoff round o f the North London tourney over the May 13/14 weekend but then they made their presence felt by avenging preliminary round losses against two o f the best teams in the province. H ighlights: what a difference a day makes as Oakville won its final and semifinal match es on Sunday against two teams it had lost to on Saturday. And they are two o f the toughest teams in the province. At one point during the final gam e, Oakville defender Carolynn Eng made a game saving play by robbing a North London player o f a sure goal with a sliding save.. What a Blast at the Royal City tournament The O akville Blast U-11AA boys rep soc cer team defended their tournament champi onship at the Royal City Soccer Tournament held in Guelph over the Victoria Day weekend. Dominating the opposition, the Blast were not scored upon in the tournament, culminating in a 4-0 shutout in the championship game over Woodstock. Goal scorers in the final were Stephan Blaszko, Zach Hage, Gihat Sukru and Cameron Keighley. Oakville also posted shutouts in their semi final match against Heads Golden Eagles and in four preliminary round games against Dundas Kickers, LaSalle Stompers, Erin Mills Eagles and Kitchener Spirit A. Keeper Greg McKay, although not chal lenged on a regular basis, was equal to the task when required. Anchoring a rock-solid defence, Thomas Mann, Murray Cruickshank, Jason Field, Andrew Kavanagh and Chris Elliot repeatedly shut down all challenges. The midfield of Anthony Doran, Cameron Keighley, Garret Mott, John Sanfilippo, Gihat Sukru, Brendan Taylor and Michael Traynor consistently turned the attack around and pro vided numerous scoring opportunities for the strikers. Using their speed and agility, strikers Stephan Blaszko, Zach Hage, David Maduri and Matt McLaughlin created havoc for every team that faced the Blast. Head Coach Ed McLaughlin was careful to praise the Blast, knowing that their premier league opposition will provide a stronger test, starting on June 6th. Assistant Coach Alan Hughes and Manager Maurice Trainer were equally cautious with the early season success. Sponsored by General Mills Canada Inc., the Blast finished second in the Premier Division o f the South Region Soccer League last year and hopes to build on that success during the 2000 outdoor season. Strong showing at Challenge Cup With the regular season just around the cor ner, the O akville Blizzard U12 Boys soccer team put in a strong showing with three wins and one loss at the 2000 Challenge Cup Tournament in Richmond Hill on May 13 and 14. That one loss kept them out o f the champi onship game, bdt the weekend proved that this year's edition o f the Blizzard will be a force. This season the Blizzard will play in the South Region League's U-12 Premier Division following their first place finish in the U -ll First Division last year. Blizzard head coach Paul Shields, with assistant coach John Kadet and manager George Farrugia, added three new players to last year's team. Vilayath A li, Ian Desouza and Danny Garcia, add some speed, strength and size to the already impressive line-up o f thirteen players from last season. Returning to the Blizzard are Mark Badrov, Giovanni Cardillo, Patrick Coster, Anthony Delgiudice, Julian Fabiani, Chris Farrugia, Nikolas Jelicic, Evan Kadet, Greg Pucillo, David Schnittker, Ryan Shields, Matthew Smith and Nicholas Warelis. 2000 Challenge Cup at Richmond Hill ... Blizzard 1, North Mississauga Jaguars 0 The game was played in difficult, windy conditions. The Blizzard dominated the first half, but were only able to score once when Danny Garcia scored in the 19th minute from a Nikolas Jelicec pass. The second half was score less although the Blizzard had numerous oppor tunities to put the game away. Giovanni Cardillo kept the Jaguars score sheet clean. (the "Utility") must unbundle electricity rates into electrici ty distribution rates and rates for power and other charges in order to meet the requirements of new legislation. The Utility has filed its submissions with the Ontario Energy Board (the "Board") with respect to rates for the distrib ution of electricity. The Utility will, at a future date, file its submission with respect to rates for the provision of regulated power supply (Standard Supply Service or "SSS") and other non-competitive electricity distribution rates related to the transmission of electricity and services provided by the Independent Electricity Market Operator to the Utility ("other non-competitive electricity distribution rates"). In the first phase of this proceeding ("Phase One"), the Board will approve or fix just and reasonable rates for the distribution of electricity under subsection 78(3) of the Ontario Energy Board Act, 1998. In one or more subsequent phases of this proceeding ("Subsequent Phases"), the Board will approve or fix just and reasonable rates for SSS and other non-competitive electricity distribution rates. The Ontario Energy Board (the "Board") has issued an Electricity Distribution Rate Handbook, which stipulates that the distribution rate component of the electricity bill must be sub-divided into a fixed monthly charge and a variable charge. This rate restructuring, while having no overall impact on the Utility' s revenues, may result in individual customer rate changes. The Rate Handbook also allows a Utility to apply for a change in it distribution rates in order to earn up to a market based rate of return after tax. The Utility has applied for a rate of return of 9.88%. The adjustments would increase the customer bill (based on 1999 rates) for a residential customer with a monthly electricity consumption of 1,000 kWh by 14.4%. In order to mitigate the rate impact on residential customers, the Utility has applied to phase-in the rate of return adjustment with a rate increase of 8.1% implemented on July 1, 2000, and 6.3% implemented on November 1, 2000, or market opening whichever is later.
