Roula said her only son (Robert has two sisters) has been a math enthusiast since Grade 4. Before that, he was "more average," she said, noting that both she and her husband are chartered accountants. "Grades 3 and 4, he really excelled. He was never noticed before." Robert's mom and his teacher were quick to point out that Robert is a hard worker. His mom even suggested that he used to ask her buy math books so that he could problem solve in his spare time. The "Fast Lane" consists of multiple copies of bestseller on display, mainly fiction, which are available for short-term, seven-day loans with no holds and no renewals. This gives library users an option to access Best Sellers for a quick read in a more timely manner than is currently available with holds/reserves lists. To encourage quick turn-over of the collection, overdue charges are $1 per day. The Library will still have multiple copies of these titles in the regular collection which can be reserved, renewed and borrowed for the normal loan periods. Drop by your local OPL branch for a compli mentary cup of coffee tomorrow morning and explore the titles in this collection. * 2 7 ,9 6 0 " 1 9 9 8 FORD CONTOUR SPORT M C M * 1 5 ,8 1 0 1 9 9 9 MERCURY COUGAR J9D D ^ R SPORT 1 9 9 8 F0RD CONTOUR Auto, pwr grp quality certified, tropic green, 33,350 kn Kms. Either way, the student did ultimately learn to love math and, if he had to choose a career today, he said it would def initely involve math. "The more you do, the more you train yourself to approach a problem in a certain way," explained Ceelen, adding that math is not Robert's only strong suit. "He is perhaps the most well-rounded student that I have ever taught in my 18 years of teaching." The 12-year-old math whiz also plays soccer and hockey, and he is an accomplished artist as well as an avid reader and writer. "He does a lot of reading. He read 100 novels in Grade 4," says Roula. "That was the year that he began to excel. His creative writing comes from his reading a lot." Robert simply shrugs his shoulders and smiles. The Gauss test, said Ceelen, is a one-hour test, consisting of 25 questions, in three parts. Part A, he said, is basic, computation skills; Part B is medium level problem solving; and Part C is complex prob lem solving. "If you gave Part C to most adults, they would get more wrong that right," he said. "There was a girl in Grade 8 (at St. Marguerite) who scored 142. She missed one question in Part C. In my class I had some 130s and 129s. We had a lot of scores over 100; more than normal." This year, over 17,000 Ontario students wrote the Gauss Contest, and 39,000 participated world wide. It is part of the Canadian Mathematics Competition, which is sponsored, in part, by the fac ulty of mathematics at the University of Waterloo. Last year, only five perfect scores were reported from across Canada at the Grade 7 level. This year's tabulations will not be released by The University of Waterloo until August. 1 9 9 9 FORD TAURUS SE ABS, alloy wheels, quality certi fied, dark satin green, 40,010 kms. The i-- i study is being carried out in rA & & accordance with the Municipal s Engineers Association 5 \ X « guidelines for a `Schedule C' i i ClassEnvironmental Assessment for Municipal Road Projects. The study will LAKESHORE RD review the need and justification for possible improvements to the existing Proposed Dorval corridor and evaluate Drive Extension alternatives for the extension. Upon completion of the study, an Environmental Study Report will be filed on the public record. The Town's Official Plan classifies Dorval Drive from Speers Road to Lakeshore Road West as a Major Arterial, including that portion known as Margaret Drive between Rebecca Street and Lakeshore Road West.
