A * :* :* A ,V L l EcoExchange a boon for Brazil & Ontario A group of Brazilian students had the opportunity to check out the nat ural charms of Oakville last week during a short visit to Toronto and environs. It's all part of a program sponsored by the Brazilian government and the Earth Council Institute-Canada to use environmental education and ecologi cal monitoring as tools to promote local action on social and environ mental issues. The Canada-Brazil Ecological M onitoring Exchange Program (EcoExchange) allows students from Canada and Brazil, the opportunity to strengthen skills development, scien tific capacity, leadership skills and volunteerism. The project focuses on watersheds in the GTA and Pedra Branca State Park at Rio de Janeiro. The students studied the outdoor ecology of Fourteen Mile Creek, through the aid of St. Thomas Aquinas High School instructor Dr. Pedro Pereyra. The visit by the Brazilian students comes after a similar visit by Toronto area students to Brazil last August. But the Eco Exchange work goes on year-round both here and in Brazil. All volunteer participants in the Eco Exchange project test and record water quality data from specific sites four times each year. The information generated on these dates creates a baseline from which to compare and contrast water quality across the GTA over an extended period of time. Students often conduct tests as often as suites their particular needs and interests. Streams and rivers currently being monitored, aside from Fourteen Mile Creek in Oakville area: German Mills Creek, Highland Creek, TaylorMassey Creek, Wilket Creek and the Don River. Ernie Samuel, 69 Industrialist made mark in horse racing Family of Four - 1 Week From (Children 14 and under stay FREE!) Industrialist, philanthropist and sportsman Ernie Samuel is dead at the age of 69. Samuel died of cancer at his Oakville home last Thursday. A pri vate family funeral service took place Friday, and a public memorial funeral is scheduled for June 7th at the Royal Ontario Museum -- one of the many beneficiaries of his phil anthropy. Samuel was best known as a breeder of champion horses, both thoroughbred racers and equestrians, E rnie Samuel at his Sam-Son Farm in Milton. Photo by Michael Bums Along with equestrian Jim Day, Samuel owned top show jumper Canadian Club. Day and Canadian Club were part of Canada's gold medal-winning equestrian team at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. Samuel and Day went on to forge a partnership at the racetrack beginning in 1977, Day training the red- and-gold colours of the Sam-Son Farm string during the glory days of the 1980s and early `90s, before Mark Frostad took over as trainer with similar success. At his 225-acre Halton farm and a 160-acre spread in Ocala, Fla., the Sam-Son machine turned out champions like Dance Smartly, Sky Classic and later, Chief Bearhart, as well as a host of other stakes-winning thoroughbreds. Samuel's charges won 39 Sovereign awards, including six horses of the year, and he was a five-time winner of the Sovereign for top owner and twice for top breeder. He also won Eclipse awards with Sky Classic in 1992 and Breeders' Cup Turf winner Chief Bearhart in `97. Samuel, a longtime trustee and former vice-president of the Ontario Jockey Club and a director of Breeders' Cup Ltd., was instrumental along with the late Charles Taylor in securing the 1996 Breeders' Cup at Woodbine. In `98, he was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame and awarded the Order of Canada. "Ernie Samuel was one of the giants of thoroughbred rac ing, both in Canada and internationally," OJC president David Willmot said in a statement, following Samuel's death. As an industrialist, Samuel served as president of Samuel, Son & Co. - a steel and aluminum distributing busi ness founded in 1855 by his great-grandfather -- from 1962 until April. In 1985, Samuel created Samuel Manu-Tech Inc., of which he also served as chairman and CEO until shortly before his death. As a philanthropist Samuel helped build a new residence at Appleby College. In 1994 he donated $5 million to Princess Margaret Hospital for a new radiation therapy cen tre for cancer patients. Samuel was a board member of the Royal Ontario Museum and over the years donated millions to the museum to support the redevelopment of several galleries. In the last few years, Samuel overcame a near-fatal acci dent to remain active. He suffered a subdural hematoma bleeding between his brain and his skull - early in 1997 that sent him into a coma, then months of rehabilitation. Samuel is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, daughters Kim Samuel Johnson and Tammy Samuel Balaz and son Mark. He had three grandchildren Caitlin, Lisa and Michael. -- With files from Torstar Wire Service The Hamilton Stamp Club & The Canadian Stamp Dealers Association $3296.00 2 5 7 - 8 7 4 7 Inch Tax Call Bruce Hood Travel Today!
