FRIDAY JANUARY 2 0 Sedation Dentistry For some people going to the dentist and undergoing dental treatment, whether a routine cleaning or a more involved procedure, creates a lot of anxiety and fear. These fears and anxiety can come from previous traumatic dental experience, sensitive teeth, difficulty getting numb, sensitive gag reflex, complex dental conditions, and/or general high fear level. In these cases Dr Arun Narang would recommend sedation dentistry, as an effective method to calm nerves and anxiety so that dental treatment can be performed when the patient is relaxed and comfortable. There are a number of methods of sedation that can be used in dentistry, including oral medication, nitrous oxide and IV sedation. Oral medications are prescription medications that minimize nervousness by putting the patient in a sleepy state where they can still be woken and asked to follow simple requests during dental treatment. Typically after treatment the patient will be kept for observation before being sent home accompanied. Nitrous Oxide, also known as "laughing gas" , uses a mix of nitrous oxide and oxygen gases administered through a mask which is breathed in. The gas creates an effect which is calming and relaxing. Once finished with the procedure 100% Oxygen is breathed in for a specific time and clears the gases from the system completely. IV Sedation is a more comprehensive method of sedation where the patient can be in a semi-conscious or unconscious state. It is administered and monitored by a specialist in IV sedation, such as the in-office Oral Surgeon, at Dr. Narang's office. With IV Sedation special instructions must be followed before and after the treatment, and it is recommended the patient not drive home on their own, and to refrain from regular activities or going to work for 24 hours. Dr. Narang recommends sedation with dental treatment based on each individual patient's needs, medical history and general level of fear/anxiety. Call Dr. Arun Narang for a no charge consultation today to see if you are a candidate.
