In 1992, the council held a design competition for the creation of a volunteer recognition piece. Lucy Erskine, a local jewelry artist, won the competition and her lapel pins were given to winners of the Above and Beyond awards. Over 14 years, Erskine created 143 sterling pins, each one individually handcrafted. She also created a commemorative version done with gold wire to celebrate the Oakville Arts Council' s 25th anniversary "I loved doing it. There are always those people who go above and beyond and it was so nice to help recognize them," Erskine said. "It was fun to create it again and it will be interesting to see this exhibit celebrating arts volunteers." Erskine' s winning design featured a rectangular bar in a matte finish, which represented the work of a whole group. A sweep of shiny silver wire goes up and over the bar. This symbolizes the volunteers who go "above and beyond." Erskine has been a professional goldsmith for 4 0 years. She became interested in it while living in Vancouver and enrolling in a night class in the art. After just a few classes, the school had a custodial strike and the class was cancelled. "But it was just enough for me to realize I loved N o O ne Know s W e s t N ia g a r a B e tte r Lapel pin recreation it," Erskine said. "Forty years later, I still love it. I am always experimenting and learning new things, so haven't had a chance to get bored with it." The Cheers to Volunteers exhibition represents the completion of the Oakville Arts Council' s Volunteer Program development, an initiative funded through a $174,000, three-year Ontario Trillium Foundation grant awarded in 2013 designed to help local arts organizations build capacity through volunteers. It will be at the Main Gallery at Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre, 2302 Bridge Rd. in Bronte from Jan. 13 to Feb. 4, with an opening night reception to be held Jan. 19, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. For information about the exhibit or to register for opening night, visit wwwoakvillearts.com.
