23 | Friday, January 13, 2017 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Skater Chubb a t nationals with new partner Oakville teen Kaitlyn Chubb will be com peting with her partner, A lex Gunther, at the Canadian Tire N ational Skating Cham pion ships, which begin M onday in Ot tawa. The pair will compete in the ju nior ice dance category on Monday, Jan. 16 and Tuesday, Jan. 17. Chubb and Gunther started training together at the beginning of the season after each of their pre vious long-time partners decided to retire from competitive skating. Despite moving to Ottawa to train last season and represent ing the Eastern Ontario Section at nationals, Chubb still calls Skate Oakville her home club. Chubb and Gunther' s coaches are pleased with the accomplishments of the skaters in such a short time. "W e knew there was real poten tial here and these two demonstrate hard work and drive to improve themselves daily," says Michael Coreno, their head coach in Ot tawa. Chubb is up at 4 :3 0 a.m. each morning and puts in three hours of skating before m ost people start their work day. Between the time spent on the ice, physical and mental off-ice con ditioning, ballroom dancing and ballet, Chubb trains 23 hours in an average week. She' s also a full-time Grade 11 high school student who finds time to coach the next generation of skaters two evenings a week. "It is hard work, but if you have a dream -- chase it," says Chubb. She began her skating career in the CanSkate program at Skate Oakville in 2 0 0 7 , moving into the competitive program in the fall of 2008. She became an inaugural member of the Competitive Ice Dance Program at the club in 2011. In 2 0 1 4 , Chubb and her previous partner, Oakville' s Alexander Mo ses, were Central Ontario juvenile sectional champions. A year later they took the bronze medal at nov ice sectionals, earning a berth in the Skate Canada Challenge. Chubb' s move to Ottawa at the age of 15 was to pursue the next stage of her competitive skating ca reer with Gunther. She still considers Oakville her home, however. "I would not be here if it was not for the support of my family, Skate Oakville and its coaches," Chubb said. "I am so proud to say I am from Oakville." Knights of Columbus Basketball Free Throw competition set lor Jan. 2 8 Oakville kids ages 9-14 will compete later this month in the annual Knights of Columbus Basketball Free Throw Championship. Boys and girls in each age group will vie to ad vance to the next level of the competition. It all starts Saturday, Jan. 28 at St. Thomas Aqui nas Catholic Secondary School at 9 a.m. Many of the participants are winners of com petitions at 18 Oakville Catholic elem entary schools. Children who attend Oakville schools that don't have qualifying com petitions or those who are hom e-schooled can sign up (accom pa nied by parent or guardian) at Aquinas the day of the event. Special Olympic athletes are also invited to com pete that day Participants shoot free throws in the appropri ate age and gender divisions vying to sink the most baskets. W inners receive recognition prizes and progress to district and provincial competitions. Oakville-wide winners will be invited to partici pate in the district championship on Saturday, Feb. 4 at Corpus Christi High School at 5150 Upper Middle Rd., in Burlington. International cham pions are announced by the K of C headquarters in New Haven, C onn., based on scores from provincial-level com p eti tions.
