B2 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday June 7,2000 CFO hires Millennium projects co-ordinator The Com m unity Foundation of O akville (CFO), best known as a fundraising and granting organization, has taken on a new initiative - to stim ulate and register the tow n's Millennium projects. The challenge, however, has been the registering of the projects. The solution was the appointment o f Darlene Jones as the C FO 's Millennium Co-ordinator Since her appointment about a month ago, more than 30 projects have been registered, everything from Oakville's Millennium Eve celebra tions and the unveiling of the town's Millennium Clock, to projects under taken in local schools and St. Andrew's Church burying a time capsule. Jones has been visiting community organizations and schools, and contact ing individuals, about their Millennium projects - projects that have found their way into the Oakville Beaver or reached her via word-of-mouth. "For example, my neighbour is planting trees as his Millennium pro ject," said Jones, "and I know of a nurse who is telling people to get tetanus shots as her project." Jones is facilitating the registration of these projects and forwarding them to be posted on the Our Millennium website, sponsored by the Community Foundation of Canada. The site will serve as a permanent legacy. The web site address is: www.ourmillennium.ca Her goal is to register between 100 and 150 projects by the end of December, when her contract position ends. "As Oakville's Millennium co-ordi nator, I would like to be able to identify all of the special events and activities that Oakville residents and organiza tions are planning, or have already completed," explains Jones. "With their permission, I will regis ter their activity with the national Our Millennium website. By the end of the year, this website will have a permanent national record to remind Canadians of their achievements during the millenni um year. I know that Oakville will be well represented by its many commem orative projects." Jones has her own millennium pro ject to register. Last Christmas, she wrote and directed a play, Y2K Christm as, for her church, Grace Chapel. "I wanted to tell the 2000 year-old Christmas story in such a way that it would be current and relevant to people who were facing both the Y2K chal lenge and the new millennium." In Act I, she related stories of some of the actors playing the age-old Bible characters in such a way that their sto ries paralleled the people they would editor o f the M illennium News, a newsletter distributed by the Oakville 2000 Committee. She plans on register ing all of the events and legacies that this Committee staged in the year 1999, including The Oakville 2000 Heritage Ball, Swing Time Dance, the Santa Claus Heritage Parade, among others. Our Millennium is a program that invites Canadians to get together and give together. This national initiative is spearheaded by the Com m unity Foundations across Canada. Our Millennium encourages organizations to make special gifts to their communi ty in honour of the Millennium, and then record it nationally as a record, which will be kept permanently in the National Archives in Ottawa.
