Wednesday June 7, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER B3 United Way founder dies A founding member of the Oakville United Way, Guenter `George' He'ym, has died last Friday at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital following a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 73. He was bom on Aug. 26, 1927, in Erfurt, Tueringia, Germany, and immi grated to Canada in 1953. After spend ing a year in Saskatchewan, he moved to Oakville. He worked at St. Lawrence Cement for 37 years, retiring as purchasing manager in 1992. His involvem ent in helping to launch the Oakville United Way in 1959 is only one area where Heym con tributed to the community. He was also a founding member of the former Oakville Social Planning Council, now part of the Halton Social Planning Council, in 1968, and served as a director and president to 1982. He served on the M ayor's Advisory Committee to Canada Manpower on Unemployment from 1961 to 1968; served as a director for Grace House from 1984 to 1991; was a director and president of the Halton Children's Aid Society from 1967 to 1979; a director with Halton Helping Hands from 1987 to 1989; was vice-chairman o f the Halton Lung Association from 1968 to 1971; served on the steering committee to create the Halton District Health Council, now the Halton-Peel District Health Council, from 1974 to 1976; was a director on the Ontario Welfare Council from 1973 to 1978; president of the Oakville & D istrict Labour Council from 1961 to 1969; and served as a member of the executive council of the Ontario Federation of Labour from 1961 to 1969. With the Oakville United Way from 1959 to 1991, he served as a director, vice-president, and as commercial and industrial campaign chairm an. He chaired the Halton Regional Voluntary Funding Study from 1978 to 1981 to create United Ways across the region; and was a director of the United Way of Canada from 1975 to 1977.' In addition to his various volunteer positions in the community, he was a volunteer canvasser for different fundraising campaigns, she added. In recognition of his contributions to the community, Heym received an Award of Appreciation from the Oakville United Way in 1990; a leader ship award from the United Cement, Lime & Gypsum Workers, for serving as union president of Local 366 from 1963 to 1969; received a Canadian Centennial Year medal in 1967 for his "valuable contribution" to the commu nity; an award from the Oakville & District Labour Council in 1979 for "outstanding service" to the union movement and the community; and was given a Life Membership by the Halton Children's Aid Society in 1980. He is survived by his wife Ruth, stepson Michael and his wife Nora Sommer, stepdaughter Ruby and her husband Dave Bohnert and their son Spencer, plus many relatives in Canada and Germany. Visitation will be held at the Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore Rd. W., tomorrow (June 8th) from 2 to 4 p.m., and from 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the chapel on Friday at 11 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. "He was a very quiet and proud man, a serious man, who liked every thing done correctly. He didn't talk too much about all of the things he had done." A/uc/ls .. CMHA day at Bronte Creek Saturday June 17th will be a busy day for the Canadian Mental Health Association - CMHA Halton at Bronte Creek Provincial Park. The inaugural 5K Run/Walk/Relay will be held in the morning for serious road runners and walkers, and the 4th annual Bike, Hike and Blade is held during the afternoon as a family event. Registration for the 5K Run/Walk/ Relay is from 9 to 10 a.m., for a 10;30 a.m. start. Participation cost is $25, or at least $40 in pledges, or $125 for relay teams or pledges over $250. Registration for the Bike, Hike and Blade begins at noon for a 1 p.m. start. Participants can run, walk, cycle, bring kids in strollers, and bring the dog. There is a new separate paved course for blading. Cost is $25 or pledges over $25.
