Oliver, 13, Laura, 11, and Jennifer, 8, returned from the M ilton Music Festival with two gold medals and one $50 scholarship each, plus a few silver medals, a couple o f bronze, and an award to boot. Quit feat for a family in which the three siblings have only been playing the piano for a couple years. All three Heritage Glen Public School students compet ed in the Grade 2 level at the music festival. Their musical talent, says mom, is genetic. "My dad got us started on it," agrees Laura. "He has a m aster's in music from Cambridge Universi ty in England," explains their mom. Bo, noting with embar rassment that none o f her offspring is inclined to practice much. "It's just pure talent," boasts the ingenuous Laura, "because we win all these medals!" `T h ey are musical," admits Bo with chuckle, as she lightly admonishes her daughter for such a bold proclama tion. Oliver, who is preparing to enter high school in Septem ber, says he and his sisters do practice more if there is a piano exam or music festival on the horizon. The teen, who also won two bronze medals, has already taught him self how to play guitar - his instrument o f choice, he says. However, mom isn't prepared to let him give up his piano lessons for guitar quite yet. Laura, the proud recipient o f two silver medals, was awarded one of her gold medals for a duet she played with her sister. The duet was praised by the adjudicator, who suggested the sisters made a "fine team." Jennifer came home with three silvers and an award, despite the long stretch she had to make to work the pedals on the piano. And, says her mom with obvious pride, "Jen nifer composes music, too." The impressive collection o f medals and scholarships that the Kirby kids brought home from the festival did not go unnoticed by their parents. `T h ey are getting an award from us, too," says Bo. "We are going to see M amma M ia."
