·0 Wednesday, June 7, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER C3 F o rm e r O akville B eaver re p o rte r reads fro m n ew est b o o k Linwood Barclay will be reading from his newest book, Last R esort, at Bookers Bookstore on Thursday, June 15th at 7:30 p.m., followed by a book signing. Refreshments will be served. Last R esort is a m emoir of Bar clay's days at a cottage and trailer resort in O ntario's Kawartha Lakes region, where he and his family moved when Barclay was 11 years old. Ultim ately, Barclay found an extended family in the resort's guests, who lent him a hand and shaped him into the man he would become. In Last Resort, the author vividly recalls the summers of his youth: the ardent romances, early morning fish ing expeditions, com petitive male diversions, and curious cottage-coun try characters. From behind the funny stories there emerges a family chronicle that soars on its own strange trajectory, through tragedy and triumph, to a poignant conclusion. Barclay is currently a staff colum nist for the Life section of the Toronto Star. Earlier in his journalism career, he worked at the O akville JournalRecord and the O akville Beaver. He has written four books to date: Father Knows Zilch, This H ouse Is Nuts!, M ike H arris M ade M e E at M y Dog and Last Resort. Call Bookers at 844-5501 for reservations to the book signing, or to reserve a signed edition o f the book. Singers sought for upcom ing season The Oakville Christian Youth Choir invites young peo ple between the ages of 14 and 22 to audition for its upcom ing fall season. Auditions will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church on June 15th from 5 to 6:30 p.m., June 16th from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and June 17th from 10 a.m. to noon. Since choristers are encouraged to accompany the choir whenever possible, potential choristers who are proficient musicians are invited to bring their musical instruments to the audition and be ready to play. The Oakville Christian Youth Choir is an interdenomi national community choir that is sponsored by Knox Pres byterian Church and affiliated with the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM.). At the end of each choral year, choristers receive medallions and certificates from the RSCM. The choir performs sacred and secular music of all gen res, and sings mainly in four-part harmony. Each rehearsal includes tutoring in vocal skills. The 15 current choir members represent eight different churches and six different denominations. They perform at various churches in Oakville and Burlington and hope to expand their scope to include hospitals, homes for the elderly and even prisons in the new season, which will con clude with a formal Christmas performance. Music director, Christel Kirstein specialized in vocal performance when she was earning her BA in music from the University or Pretoria, South Africa. To make an appointment for an audition, contact Kirstein at 469-1176. S pring Into S ummer!!
