Mike Momingstar, head instructor o f M omingstar Taekwon-Do, is the host of this prestigious event that will bring competitors from across Canada and the U.S.A. together for a full day of exciting com petition this Saturday (June 10). Some special guests that will attend are Master Choi Jang Hwa, the son of the founder of Taekwon-Do, Master Robert Wheatley from Reno, Nevada, who will also put on a demonstration, Grand Master Hwang Kang Sang from Connecticut and MPP Gary Carr. Maple Leaf Field Hockey Tournament is com ing back to Oakville where it all began. More than two dozen teams will compete at Appleby College in four divisions -- senior men, senior women, and U-18 and U-13. And for the Oakville Field Hockey Club, the timing couldn't be better. "We've attracted some pretty good players over the past couple of years," says OFHC founder and general care taker John Picone. "They've been bug ging me about getting a team into a tournament, compete with other clubs." And so the fast growing Oakville club will put together its first inter-club squad, in the m en's division. "We're not looking for a gold medal, but I'm confident we'll be competitive." Former field hockey Olympian Jim M acDougall will coach the team, which is sponsored by Abbey Arms Restaurant which has supplied the uni forms. The Oakville team will open the tournam ent with a game against Toronto on Friday at 4:30 p.m., and will continue their schedule on Sunday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The tournament will run all day Saturday, as well, starting at 8 a.m. through to 6 p.m. Sem ifinals begin at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Tournament organizer Jesse Kular from Field Hockey Ontario has other reasons for bringing the Maple Leaf to Oakville aside from the great facility at Appleby College. "We knew we could count on the Oakville Field Hockey Club to take care of so much of the organization of the event," he said. "They've done such' a fabulous job with our National Tournaments the past two summers." The OFHC will be running a barbe cue during the tournament, and selling refreshments as well. This promises to be an exciting day not only for the competition but for the demonstrations that will take place at 1:30 p.m. Fourth degree, and above, instruc tors from Canada and the U.S. will per form demonstrations that will include lots of board breaking. The spectator fee is $5 and there will be some door prizes. For more info, contact Momingstar Taekwon-Do at 847-8955 or check out the website donated by Netinstinct at www.itfchampionships.com.
