That's because the engine coolant passes through a radiator which is cooled by air passing through it. The process works well, provided the vehicle is moving quickly enough to have adequate air flow through the radiator. But what about when the vehicle is stopped, or working hard to climb a hill with a camper in tow? The engine's fan comes to the rescue -- there are several types -- to ensure air is moving through the radiator. Several significant advances have been made in the last 15 years to better cool your engine. Radiator aad fan (top view) The fan aids cooling by forcing air through the radiator, so that cooling is still taking place, even if you're stopped, "wa ffla* Engine and radiator Coolant flow m Air passes through the front of the radiator Fan blades act like the blades Radiator # 3 Air p asses through radiator Belt-driven fixed-blade fan Blades are rigid and turned by a belt that is driven by the crankshaft. The faster the engine turns, the faster the fan turns. Even when the vehicle is moving fast enough to cool itself, the fan still spins, causing some drag on the engine. Some rigid-blade fans are thermostatically-controlled. A dutch disengages the fan when cooling is not required. The disengaged fan is not as much a drain on the engine's power. Belt of flax faa Made Belt-driven flex fan As the term Implies, the blades of a flex fan flex,' or flatten, as engine speed increases. The benefits are good tow-speed cooling, and less high-speed drag. The blades are thin and made of stainless steel, aluminum or even fiberglass. And like a real-life buddy, if it tries to talk to you, it's not a good idea to stick your head in the sand. 'Cause whatever's wrong is bound to come out sooner or later. There are often a lot of little signals you can pick up from your car before the repair bill gets out of control - as long as you pay attention. For example, you may think that leaky tire just needs a shot of air once in a while to keep going. But let it go, and you could find yourself with an emergency blowout, or simply what used to be a tire, now strewn in a trail of chewed-up chunks behind you. If you're lucky, you won't permanently damage the wheel or the fender. . . or the bumper. And what started as a $10 patch job has suddenly become a hundred-dollar new tire, or more if you dam -- pay An electric fan -- sometimes two are used -- is swithced on by the vehide once a certain coolant temperature is reached. When the temperature returns to normal, the fan(s), made ofplastic, shuts off. The fan remains off when the vehide is moving fast enough to cool itself and causes the least drag on an engine. Electric fans allow the vehicle to remain near optimum operating temperature at all times. C O P Y R IG H T W H E E LB A S E C O M M U N IC A T IO N S age other components. Indeed, a little complacency can go a long way. Another common disaster-waiting-to-happen proves that even a car's beauty only runs skin deep. "If people don't treat minor scratches or dents on the sheet metal of the car, and they leave scratches down to the metal exposed for any length of time, it creates premature surface rust ing," says John Vincente, a Volkswagen service manager. "That expands into full-out rust if it's not treated properly. People get a door dent and don't treat it, and three years down the road they wonder why they have a rust hole in the door," he says. In colder climates, where salt is used to thaw the streets, Vincente adds it's vital to keep cleaning that salt off the car throughout the winter.
