At that point, at least a portion o f the Maplehurst super jail will be up and running. "Then we basically turn over Maplehurst as we know it now," said Leithead. The final phase, to be completed by next spring, will retrofit existing accommodations. The super jail will then be able to hold 1,200 male inmates, about 200 o f which will be serving provincial sentences of up to two years less a day in medium security. Higher sentences are a federal jurisdiction. The remainder o f the male inmates will be awaiting sentencing -- or on remand -- in maxi mum security. Currently, there are no female inmates at Maplehurst. W hen they arrive, about 150 will be sentenced. The rest will be on remand. Since Maplehurst inmates may have served harder time in the past, efforts are made to place inmates in the facilities best able to handle them, said Leithead. j TM r ° w ?
