Other age categories are under10, under-12, and under-14. The local tournam ent with a long history in town is open to any resident or m em ber o f an O akville Tennis Club. The entry fee is $10 which covers the players' barbecue on Saturday at mid-day, player kits, T-shirts (spon sored by A ir A thletics), and draw prizes donated by both the M erchant o f Tennis and C orbett's. Trophies will go to all age-class cham pions, finalists, and consola tion w inners, courtesy o f Royal LePage real estate professional, M aryann Thom pson. Tournam ent m atches will consist o f eight-gam e pro-sets for all age groups. Finals will be two out of three sets (normal six-game sets), except for the boys and girls under10 who will play a single, eightgame pro-set in the final. Entries must be received by next Sunday (June 11th), at 8 p.m., deliv ered by hand or by mail addressed to the Bronte Tennis Club, 2310 Bridge Rd,, Oakville, ON L6L 2G6. Entries will also be accepted at W allace Park Tennis Club (Club Pro, Bobby Armitage), on Reynolds Street. Cheques should be made payable to the O akville Junior Championships. Coordinator Pierre Ranger and B ronte Club Pro N atalie Nemez expect to see more juniors in the draw this year with the two new age categories. There were 60 competi tors in the 1999 championships. "We have a lot o f fun," said Ranger. "A part from the tennis, which is often exceptional, the kids ju st have a great time. Local busi nesses kick in for the barbecue -- Sobey's in Bronte and Loblaws on the Lakeshore, plus Business Depot and, o f course, Good H um or Breyers has been very generous with ice cream treats in the past. Penn will be the official tournament ball. "Club volunteers do the cooking and serving, and assist the younger players in keeping score. (S e e W a lla c e ' p a g e 2 5) B antam Angels ranked second in province The Oakville Angels are the second ranked girls bantam fastpitch team in the province and they showed why at the recent Markham tournament, as they went undefeated in seven games to win the championship. In the process they outscored their shell shocked opponents 61-15. On Friday evening, in the opening match against Newmarket, the tone was set in a 5-1 victory. Saturday's first match-up was against Pickering 1, with a final score of 9-3. The Angels won their second game of the day 8-5 over Pickering II. In the final match of the day, the Angels pounded the London Lightning 16-0. Candace Brooks pitched six innings of no hit ball, with Jessica Littlejohn coming off the bench to record the last three outs. Over the first four - games, Brooks and Littlejohn split the pitching duties, allowing only a com bined nine hits with 18 strike-outs, while giving up four walks. Sunday morning saw the Angels tri umph 12-3 over Walkerton and 6-3 over Whitby in the Angels' closest contest of the weekend. The Angels went on to beat their Markham hosts 5-0 in the Gold Medal game. Other highlights of the tournament included 10 RBI's on 12 hits by Amrit Dhillon and 9 RBI's on 10 hits in 13 plate appearances (.770 average) by Jessica Littlejohn. Amanda Nonis and Megan Timpf each had 14 hit perfor mances, followed by Christina Benedet with 12 hits. Nonis also had 15 assists, while Timpf recorded 10 assists. Jessica Scholey contributed 7 RBI's on 9 hits, Laura Gallant and Candace Brooks each got 8 hits. Megan Paul had 6 hits and 7 put-outs, while Amanda Crawford had 7 hits, with 6 put-outs and 5 assists. Kathleen Yee had 4 hits in reduced play ing time due to an elbow injury, while newcomer Tristan Hunter contributed an RBI in limited action. opened the day with a win over Waterloo and closed with losses to the two teams who ultimately won gold and silver, Kitchener and Markham, respectively. NOVICE The novice Angels kicked off the sea son with an opening day loss to Brampton followed by a convincing win over Guelph. In league action this past week, Oakville lost to Scarborough 5-2 and tied Markham 12-12 in extra innings. RANKINGS The provincial rankings for Ontario Premier Women's Fastpitch are now out and the Oakville Angels provincial rank ings are as follows: U-13 squirt (11th), U-15 novice (7th), U-17 bantam (2nd) and U-19 midget (12th). SQUIRT The Oakville Angels Squirt softball team played five hard-fought actionpacked games to win the consolation round at the recent Kitchener tourna ment.
