M etabolism Of the almost two million Ontarians who smoke daily, it is estimated that about 750,000 will try to quit this year. Overcoming tobacco dependency is not easy. But the numbers are encouraging. There are now more ex-smokers than smokers in the province. To improve the odds, the Canadian Cancer Society has introduced self-help booklets that have been scientifically proven to help smokers break free. The series is called One Step at a Time. It rec ognizes that smokers go through changes in over coming their tobacco dependency, and that their needs vary at different stages of this cycle. It is an integrated approach which understands that quit ting is difficult, and gently supports the smoker through the five stages leading to a smoke-free lifestyle. Five stages? That might come as a surprise to most smokers who tend to think that there are only two stages: smoking and not smoking. But research shows that smokers move back and forth between five stages. Typically, they cycle through these changes, and often have to try sever al times before they quit for good. Slip-ups and set backs are a natural part of kicking the tobacco habit. The five stages are: L You don't want to quit; 2. You are considering quitting, 3. You are preparing to quit, 4. You are ready to quit, 5. You have quit and want to stay smoke-free. People can access the One Step at a Time infor mation by calling the toll-free Smokers' Helpline at 1-877-513-5333 or by downloading from the Canadian Cancer Society's website at www.cancer.ca or from any CCS office. The Helpline is open from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday to Thursday and from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Friday. It is staffed by trained professionals quali fied to provide the information and advice that's right for each individual based on his or her stage in the cycle. Callers to the Helpline will be provided with self-help materials. Depending on their needs, they may also be referred to local smoking cessation programs and supported with information about smoking cessation products.
