Oakville Beaver Weekend Sunday, June 11, 2000 Avant-garde hair show benefits abused women and children (C o n tin u e d fro m p a g e 4) "We had a fire eater at the beginning," said Parkinson. "The models were dressed in saris with over-done make-up and elaborate hair pieces." The entire show lasts 60 minutes with each salon is allotted five minutes on stage to present their styles in whatever manner they desire. "Because each salon picks their own styles and their own music, it's like a five minute mini-show," explained Parkinson. "It's continuous and there is a lot of stuff you don't normally see. It's very theatrical." Last time, one salon had their models wear nothing but body paint and put their hair up in an intricate, bizarre hairdo incorporating Styrofoam balls and fruit. "A lot of people don't know what to expect, they think you are just up on stage cutting hair and it's not going to be interest ing," said Parkinson. "But its very avant-garde." This year the Bee Hive is planning on doing an "industri al theme" that includes indus trial music (played by bands such as Nine Inch Nails) and " A lo t o f people don 't know w hat to expect, they think you are ju s t up on stage cu ttin g hair an d i t ' s n ot going to be interesting. " -- Bee Hive co-owner Stefan Parkinson custom head pieces designed and made by Parkinson for each of his seven models. The work up to the Show is very intensive. Parkinson said he takes three to four months to prepare, which, as he points out, is a lot of prep work for five minutes on stage. On the actual evening, most of the make-up, dressing and hair preparation is completed at the salon before heading over to the night club. "With 500 people in the back - models, hairdressers, make-up artists etcetera - it's crazy, that's why we do a lot of the prep in the salon, then bring the models in," said Parkinson. Working and preparing for shows is nothing new for -- the ---------------- Sleep Factory Parkinson and his wife. They have done many in the past and, while they have cut back in recent years to focus on the Bee Hive, still do a couple of shows a year plus a number of other fundraisers. Both Stefan and Sabrina received their training 15 years ago at prestigious hair salons in Toronto. Stefan with Robin Barker and Sabrina with Vidal Sasson. Six years ago they left Toronto behind and opened up salon in downtown Oakville, across from her Sabrina's sis ter's store Avalon Fine Jewellery. "It was the best move we made," said Sabrina. They have since established an excellent reputation for colour, cuts and the scalp mas sage they include with every hair treatment And, to accommodate their growing list of clients, they will be moving to a larger location across the street in January. Meanwhile, final prepara tions for Sunday's show are underway as the Bee Hive pre pares once again to out "do" the other salons. Sponsored by Joico, it will start at 8:30 p.m. For early birds there will be a barbecue at 3 p.m. on Splash's outdoor deck and after the main event show-goers can stay and dance the night away. The all-ages event is open to everyone. Admission is $15 in advance and $20 at the door.
