Oakville Beaver Weekend Sunday August 6, 2000 Public input on growth issues stresses environmental awareness public awareness regarding man's impact on the environ ment and subsequently on mankind. Right here in Oakville, deci sions surrounding development of approximately 7,600 acres of rolling countryside north of Renee Hwy. 5 have people talking Sandelowsky & about our local environment. Iris McGee Questions have been raised regarding the effect 55,000 new residents and their cars, plus over 2,000 acres of new industry with an 8 4 5 -6 6 0 1 expected 35,000 new employees will have on air quality, traffic gridlock, loss of wildlife habitat, NOTICE OF SURPLUS AND SALE etc. RE PART OF LOT 10, CONCESSION 3, SOUTH OF DUNDAS STREET Concern over these and KNOWN AS 1012 SOUTH SERVICE ROAD other issues surrounding TAKE NOTICE THAT: this development plan 1. The Corporation of the Town of Oakville, 1225 Trafalgar Road "Picture wildlife current- T H EG R E E N C O N N E C T IO N Environmental issues are making headlines in Ontario in this first year of the new mil lennium. From W alkerton's water tragedy and a C- rating of our air quality, to urban sprawl in the GTA and possible devel opment on the Oak Ridges Moraine, the environment is a hot topic. Although distressing, these headlines have had the positive effect of increasing O A K V IL L E ly inhabiting virtually all of the countryside in the development area. Even if we are successful in preserving all of the identi fied environm entally signifi cant features which account for approximately 16% of the land mass, approximately 84% of the land will still be developed. If we, in Oakville, one of the most affluent communities in all of Canada can't preserve this small piece of the pie, then who can?" Yet Elgar says her group has been told it is unreal istic to expect 16% of this land to be left natural for future gen erations to enjoy. "We know that land is cur rently selling for approximately $50,000 an acre. If we wait, especially until after it is rezoned, the land will simply become unaffordable. These environm entally significant features will be lost forever." Elgar wonders why there is not more discussion around other means of preservation such as land stewardship programs and land trusts. It will take a lot of political will to deviate somewhat from the standard planning process. I question whether the necessary political exists today." It appears the group's efforts to increase public awareness are working. An unprecedented 300 residents attended the pub lic meeting on May 18th, where Oakvillegreen gave a presenta tion. Residents came out again in droves on June 26th to voice concern over the development plan. Speakers were installed in the halls of Town Hall which took the overflow crowd. By 11:30 p.m., many residents still hadn't been heard and it was decided the meeting would con tinue Aug. 8th at 7 p.m. It is expected council will vote on the current plan at that time. Some have questioned the validity of holding such an im portant vote during peak vacation time. As Elgar states, "There are just so many unre solved issues around this plan." The effect of developing over the Trafalgar Moraine, mistakes in categorizing forests which could determine whether or not they are preserved or destroyed, and a flood plain missing entirely from the map are just three on her list. "Hopefully, residents of Oakville will make the effort one more time and come to the meeting on Aug. 8th. Such large public turnouts to meetings are rare and speak volumes about how much Oakville residents want to play an active role in growth issues." Elgar adds, "And this is an election year." The environment is certainly being talked about right here in Oakville. Not surprising when one considers it is the environ ment that we hand over to the next generation. What will the Oakville we hand over be like?
