I HAVE ADVANCED DEGREES IN ACCOUNTING, PUBLIC RELA TIONS, MARKETING, BUSINESS BUILDING, CIVIL ENGINEER ING, and SWAHILI. It's no problem for me to give you seven connecting, non-smoking pool side suites with two king size beds and four roliaways in each, and, yes, it is my fault that the hotel does not have a helicopter landing pad. O f course I have the reservation you booked six years ago, even though you don't have the confirmation number, and you think it was made under a last name that begins with an "X". I AM A TRAVEL AGENT - I speak all languages and have visited every desti nation on the planet. It's also obvious to me that when you book your reser vation for Friday, you really mean Sat urday. My company has entrusted me with all financial information and decisions and yet, I can't tell you why your hotel bill for March 1998, had a .25cent phone call charge, because obviously you shouldn't have to pay for your phone calls. YES, I AM LYING when I say there are no seats left at the lowest price. And it's no problem for one to quickly construct several more rooms at the hotel you want, and this time I won't forget the helicopter pad. I AM A TRAVEL AGENT - I am capable of checking rates for three peo ple, taking live reservations, checking my travel information updates, e-mail and voice mail messages, Internet info, and faxes - and answering fifteen phone calls simultaneously. I take responsibility for the airline food, traffic jams, rental car flat tires, weather, hotel location, and the national economy. I always know where to find the best vegetarian, Mongolian barbecue restaurant at a moment's notice. I smile, empathize, console, cajole, upsell, down-sell, cross-sell (and know when to do which) I perform, sing^ dance, stamp brochures, and fix the printer! I AM A TRAVEL AGENT!!! (We are not sure who wrote the origi nal version of this article - but it still fits the role of travel agents each dav, and is dedicated to all in the fine quaP ity, personal service they provide for each of you, their customers!)
