T hat's one way o f describing the 15-acre plot of land on the west side of Trafalgar Road - between O ak Park D rive and G lenashton D rive, which was conditionally sold, Tuesday, by the town to the Building Box, a division of Q uebec's home im prove m ent store chain, RenoDepot Inc. The land, currently the home of the Oakville Public Works adm inistration offices and the Parks M aintenance Depot, was originally the intended loca tion for a new Catholic high school. Months of negotiations, often complicated, between the town and the Halton C atholic D istrict School Board ultim ately proved fruitless when the Board developed environm ental concerns about the land. They have since chosen a site, on the Sixth Line north o f River Oaks Recreation Centre, for the new school expected to open in the fall of 2002. The Trafalgar Road sale remains conditional, how ever, upon rezoning and an official plan amendment. The land is currently desig nated agricultural, and Building Box must apply to Town Council to have it rezoned commercial. "It's up to the purchaser to make an application for rezoning," said M aynard Millman, Oakville's manag er of Realty Services. "The process can take anywhere from four to 12 months depending on the complexi ties of it, so I would think Building Box will start the process as soon as possible. "This will be handled just as any rezoning appli cation is," he added. "Full consideration will be given to the matter I'm sure." Pending council's approval, the Town will be responsible for demolition of the current buildings, while Building Box is in charge of road work both on and off the site. "There's the Public Works Adm inistration depot and then four or five metal clad buildings, so what's lost in the process is of little conse quence." For Building Box, expansion into Oakville is part o f a four-year plan intended to penetrate the Ontario market. Earlier this year, the com pany announced it would invest $350 million over that time to open 15 stores, the first two opening in Brampton and Scarborough this fall. The average Building Box warehouse store is 123,000 square feet, repre senting an investm ent o f $23 million and employing more than 300 people. It will sell hardware and vari ous do-it-yourself items on a larger scale than some of its competitors.
