I remember so well how my father would choose his next car. He loved Cadillacs. He always told me "Cadillac makes the best car." It was not so much that Cadillac actu ally made the best car but rather it was his belief that Cadillac was the car that made sense for him. Initially this made sense to me (being 6-years old) but as the marketplace changed and so many other great cars became available I think my father missed out on an opportunity to drive some equally good or often bet ter cars. This was most acute when a few years came and went where Cadillac was likely not the best value for his money but my father nonetheless bought another one. Today's consum er is far better edu cated as to what is available, has likely less free tim e and is often given quite a bit of m isinform ation when making a consum er purchase. Dentistry is not like my fa th e r's Ca dillac, nor is it like m ost purchases you will make, but there are some les sons to take to heart. You will want to ask the following im portant questions to help you find the dentist to m eet your needs. Start by asking yourself w hat you're looking for in a new dentist-patient relationship, followed by: · W hat are the hours o f operation? · Does the office offer direct billing, which means they bill your insurance company directly? · How many years of experience does the dentist have and for how long have they been at th is location? · Does the office cater to emergency patients? · How long has the support sta ff been with the dentist? · Is the office child friendly? · What services does the office provide and which ones do they refer out? Understand that not providing a certain service may not mean the dentist is in any way less desirable, as referral to specialists is often in the patients' best interest. · Where is the office located? Is it con venient and is parking free? Dentistry does offer some newer tech nology that you may be interested in from digital x rays to cerec (same day) crowns. I would encourage you to make a mental note of some of these points and maybe think them through when seeking a new dentist. Simple, right? No, not at all. The above questions are ju s t a starting point but in the end what m ost people want is a professional re lationship. Unlike the Cadillac, a profes sional relationship involves more than simply the purchase of a product for short term use and unlike the magazine commercial showing the Cadillac's fea tures, the online world can show a lot of good information and m ost importantly a lot of m isinform ation. I would remind you that the internet is a source of information and as impor tantly m isinform ation. So there you have it. It really is not like my father's Cadillac anymore.
