And speaking of pauses and facial expres sions, Graham Harley has them down to a fine science as Governor Leonato. When he talks, you can't help but watch his face, it speaks a thousand words, as do his pregnant pauses. But when it comes to the English language, even though many TV watchers may consider Archie Bunker the prototype malaprop, Shake speare created characters who were way ahead of him. The Bard just loved language in every form, including those who misused it. And constable Dogberry (Keith Knight) is one such character, adding comic relief to the darker side of this romantic comedy, which involves another decep tive plot, only this one is more insidious. If there is a downside to this play or weak link in this production's chain, it is this pernicious subplot that, understandably, lacks the enthusi asm and sparkle that carries the main plot. The audience's attention also seems to drop off in this black hole, after watching the scintillating scenes with Beatrice and Benedick. Perhaps it's lack of character development on the playwright's part when it comes to the evil Don John (Darren Hynes) and his companion, Borachio, (Matt Deslippe) that creates this lack lustre lull. No matter, with constable Dogberry and his cohorts to lighten it up, this dark diver sion is definitely not worth dwelling on. However, Much Ado About Nothing is well worth the $15 ($13 for Big Ticket members and $12 for Big Ticket Plus members) admission price. It's only slightly more expensive than a movie and packs more laughter and entertain ment into three hours than any flick. Also, the setting is natural and the actors are so close that you feel as though you're part o f the action. Just remember to bring a jacket and/or a blan ket, and you're sure to enjoy a presentation that rivals any Academ y A ward-winning perfor mance, only this one begins at 8 p.m. in Corona tion Park, Mondays through Saturdays, until August 12th. Tickets are available at the Oakville Centre box office at 130 Navy St., 815-2021. New art exhibition opens next week Using Oakville Galleries* permanent collec tion, curator and writer Ruth Kerkham points to notions of contamination, disease and corruption in Contaminated Symptoms, an exhibition that questions our society's concepts of pollution. Complicating the notion of pollution, Kerkham has selected works that point towards insidious constructions of sanitation in terms of nationality, race and gender as well as works that confront society's conceptions of disability, AIDS, and the desecration of nature, to name a few. In this exhibition, Kerkham invites viewers to negotiate their own way through their preconcep tions of pollution and contamination. Ken Lum 's piece, What is it Daddy? sets the curatorial tone by prompting moments of recognition that reflect the viewers' lives. Contaminated Symptoms opens in Oakville Galleries at Centennial Square on July 29th and continues in the gallery on the ground floor of Central Library, 120 Navy St., until Sept. 27th. Activities related to the exhibition will be fea tured on Sunday, Sept. 10th from 2 to 4 p.m. An exhibition booklet with an essay by Kerkham will be available at Oakville Galleries. The gallery is open from noon to 9 p.m. Tues days to Thursdays, from noon to 5 p.m. Fridays, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays. Admission is free.
