W hat better name for this group of five teenage singers than Dream? "It was ju st us," says Erin Donati, 17, one o f D ream 's members. "Our message is to follow your dreams." The name, however, evolved along with this vocal group, which had its beginnings as a 25-voice .choir called Teen Angels. In 1997, these angelic teen voices sang songs in malls at Christmas time to raise money for the Halton Centre for Childhood Sexual Abuse. Then, says Kristen Arthurs, 17, four of the 25 singers continued together after the holidays, forming a group th£y- called Conscious Souls, a name Arthurs says was just made up on the spot. "We wanted to put more thought into it," she says, explaining the sec ond name change. "Conscious Souls wasn't really us. It was more mature and more serious," adds Donati. "Dream just seemed to fit well with what we were doing. It rep resented the dream that we had as a group." And, they say, the group's current five members (Arthurs, first soprano, Donati, second soprano, Melissa Grif fin, 17, alto/contralto, Nicole Law, 16, alto/contralto, and Jacqueline M atthews, 16, soprano/alto) wanted to expand their audiences beyond the child abuse realm and perform at dif ferent venues. So, as Dream, the young women have performed in hospitals, seniors' homes, wine and cheese parties, wed dings, funerals, and even for a special mass. However, they have not forgot ten their roots and continue to sing songs that reflect their anti-violence beliefs. One of their most recent perfor mances took place in the Air Canada Centre at M artin's Hope Forum, an anti-abuse forum named after Martin Kruze, one of the victim 's o f the Maple Leaf Gardens abuse scandal. "It is our dream to make everyone realize how serious violence is and how to stop it," says Law. "We all need to stand up to acts o f violence and to think of ways to prevent it. If we all work together, I know this can be achieved. The key to success is believing in yourself and making your dreams come true."
