McCall - one o f 18 local carri ers - was selected to walk with the bottles of Arctic and Pacific Ocean water from Coronation Park to a point one kilometre east. Both he and his wife Rita applied, but only he was selected from the 17,000 Canadians who vied for the honour. "We're going to walk together like we intended anyway," said McCall, one of the 5,000 chosen to take part in the event. The w ater arrived at Coronation around 10 a.m. then, after two hours of speeches and activities, McCall and the others left the park and continued the relay toward Mississauga. Relay 2000 - Canada's biggest millennium project - marks the official opening of the 16,100 km Trans Canada Trail by having cit izens carry w ater from the Pacific, A rctic and Atlantic Oceans through more than 800 communities. It passed through Oakville on Day 169 of the trek. The relay began on Feb. 19th in Tuktoyaktuk, N W T when water was drawn from the Arctic Ocean. The western leg commenced on April 7th in Victoria, B.C. ( S e e `R e l a y ' p a g e 1 2 ) St. Ignatius of Loyola Secondary School is crammed to the brim and there's still 85 more students who want in this fall. While a new Catholic high school for northeast Oakville is in the works and scheduled to open by February 2002, staff with the Halton Catholic District School Board are struggling to figure out just how to accommodate all of this year's students. "If all of those 85 (on the waiting list) come in, we're going to have prob lems," director o f education Fred Sweeney told trustees, Tuesday night. Sweeney is hopeful the number of students on the list will be whittled ( S e e `L o y o la ' p a g e 7 ) Photo by Barrie Erskine Seven-year-old Jeffrey Miotto at Coronation Park was one of many Oakville Parks and Recreation Day Campers attending the Trans Canada Relay 2000 celebration.
