Since the 1960s, Adnan has been known for her influential writing, particularly on the injustices of violence and war. In recent years, her work as a visual artist has been the subject of much attention, with her dynamic use of colour and compelling approach to form being met with widespread acclaim. For her first solo exhibition in Canada, Adnan presents primarily recent works that demonstrate the breadth of her artistic practice. Whether meditating on the motifs of mountains, water and light, as in her small-format paintings; designing tapestries inspired by the Persian rugs of her childhood; or combining drawing and poetry in her concertina-folded leporelli, Adnan's works are rooted in a profound engagement with her environment, www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE At The Etel Adnan: Sea and Fog exhibit at Gairloch Gardens, animator Narisa Veda, right, shows Oakville's Winston Lau and his daughter Aerin Lau, 14, the wool tapestry entitled Foret autumnal 2015, as the pair tours the exhibit. | Graham Paine/Metroland reflecting as readily on the political realities of our time as on the sustaining beauty and power of the natural world. "Etel Adnan is a visionary and vital voice for our troubled times," said Oakville Galleries' Curator Frances Loeffler. "Her work asks us to think uncompromisingly about today's most urgent issues, and to seek solace in art, nature and togetherness. We deeply value the opportunity to bring her work to Canadian audiences for the first time." Born in Dublin, Levine immigrated to Toronto in 1957, where he enjoyed his first acclaim as an artist through solo exhibitions at the David Mirvish Gallery, Hart House, the Isaacs Gallery and the Art Gallery of Ontario. He moved to New York City in 1964 and found even greater success. By 1966, the Village Voice declared Levines sculptures as "some of the most important, pleasurable, and astonishing things now to be seen in this city." Levine became one of the most exhibited artists of his generation. A pioneer in many realms, Levine was known for developing new approaches to art making. He was among the first to make use of industrial processes for artistic purposes, for example, producing a range of artworks in collaboration with plastics manufacturers. He also was an early experimenter in new technologies, such as closed-circuit camera systems, which he used to create large-scale interactive installations. Interested in the power of communications media, he created a range of artworks using thenburgeoning video technologies. His exhibition at Oakville Galleries brings together a numerous key works in painting, sculpture, sound and other media, dating from the mid-1960s to the early 1970s. Constantly expanding the parameters of what could be understood as art, Levine' s artworks anticipated the rapid changes in media technologies - and artistic practice -- that would characterize the second half of the twentieth century. "By providing this rich cross-sampling of Levine's early production, new audiences will be initiated into this incredible corpus of work," said guest curator Sarah Robayo Sheridan. "In the process, Levine's significant influence on the development of ideas in art will register with new clarity." Nest Wealth trady© Buy a n d sell in y o u r n e ig h b o u rh o o d .
