Senior's Day Event to 55 years or better*! the Inuit, the aboriginal peoples of Northern Canada. Inukshuks are practical and valuable aids to the Inuit who live and travel in the far North. They're used as guides, sign posts and territorial markings, as well as hunting tools to herd caribou. "In the far north, it's a land mark," Kudluk confirmed. "They are built as you need them. It could mean a direc tion, or to mark a spot. If you see one, you know it's been around a long time from gener ations past. It has strong mean ing." Kudluk's first love is carv ing polar bears and the human form out of stone such as ser pentine. As a young boy, he watched his grandfather make miniature harpoons for mem bers of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in the commu nity. His first attempt at carv ing occurred in grade school. Due to the substandard tools and the quality of materials, he was not enthused by the expe rience and didn't rediscover from carving until many years later. In the spring of 1998, while watching the Inuit Art Foundation's Board of Directors, Kudluk resumed carving with a renewed excite ment. He credits his inlaying techniques to the well-known Northern Quebec carver Mattiusi Iyaituk of Ivujivik.. Last year, Kudluk was com missioned by Ottawa's Museum of Civilization to pro duce five carvings at different stages o f completion. They were on display for 10 months at the museum as part of the public programming for the "Iqqaippa" exhibition celebrat ing Nunavut a rt He has also taught stone carving to adult students at the National Gallery of Canada. Today, Kudluk resides in the Ottawa region with his wife and three children, and works at the Inuit Art Foundation in Ottawa as a Northern Projects Co-ordina tor. "I have a passion for it," he said. "I'm in contact with close to 2,000 artists in Northern Ontario. It's a job I really love."
