20 Oakville Beaver Weekend Sunday, October 8, 2000 Sports An Oakville Beaver Feature Editor: NORM NELSON Phone:845-3824, ext 255 Fax:337-5567 E-mail:nneison@ haltonsearch.com Happy Thanksgiving The Oakville Rangers atom AA rep hockey team may not be at their own tables for turkey dinner over the Holiday Weekend -- depending on their suc cess at the Georgetown tournament -- but hopefully they've ensured that some less fortunate families will enjoy a hearty meal. The teammates collected bottle returns at the Beer Store, located on Upper Middle Road and Third Line, and raised $266, to be donated to the Oakville foodbank. The team wishes to thank the location for allowing them to hold the fundrais er and the patrons who gave generously. Meanwhile, here's a recap of their season, thus far. EARLY BIRD TUNE-UP O akville had a great tune-up to the sea son, w inning the M arkham Early Bird over the Sept. 7-10 weekend. It boiled down to O akville needing two final wins over previously undefeated North York Knights -- and they did ju st that. They won the final cham pionship gam e 4-2. And they had to do it the hard w ay after North York, with their goalie pulled, tied the gam e at 2-2 with less than one second remaining. And that has meant more than a few calls from folks enquiring about coverage for their team or league. So, once again, here's the scoop. First, of all, in case you didn't know, the rep or all-star reports are provided by the team. The most convenient way to submit them, quite frankly, is e-mail (nnelson@ haltonsearch.com). That way it doesn't have to be re typed. But if you're not hooked up, feel free to fax it (337-5567) or drop it off (467 Speers Road). As far as content, keep it short and sweet unless something special or out of the ordinary has happened. And that could be any number of things -- a player making a remarkable come back from an injury, winning a top tourney or playoff game or maybe even a much anticipated first place showdown with an arch rival. A long winded, chronological recounting of the entire game, including full-blown descrip tion of each goal, takes too much space and actu ally requires too much work for most readers. For the most part, they're happy if they can quickly find out who got the points, and then maybe a highlight or two. For example ... Goals were scored by John Doe (2), Sid Smith (2) and Jack Johnson. Assists to Doe, Smith and Grant Jackman. George Jones had a stand-out game on the blueline with a couple o f blocked shots and some momentum changing body checks. Goal descriptions should be the exception and not the rule. Maybe if it's a picture perfect goal or was really a key one then, yes, a descrip tion would spice up the story. Otherwise, it's just going to bog the reader down. Another thing to note is that high school var sity reports are welcome, it's just that, in the past, they simply haven't come in to the Beaver anywhere near as steadily as the rep reports. HOUSE LEAGUE As far as house league, we still do print reports. Not that it has been a problem in the past few years, but just to mention it: house league reports should be submitted on a league basis (i.e. MOHA's atom red division) and not by an individual team (which would make it an orga nizational nightmare). It's all dow nhill fro m h ere The Milton Heights racing club, which skis out of Glen Eden, is gearing up for the upcoming season. The regular travel leagues are back this year, including ... · Nancy Greene/Mackenzie Leagues (6 to 13 years); · Hershey Alpine League (14 to 19 years); · Masters adult ski racing (20 years to 80 +yrs); · and snowboard racing (7 to 19 years) As well, new this year, the club will offer both adult and youth house league racing (non travelling teams) for recreational purposes.
