Sunday, October 8, 2000 Oakville Beaver Weekend Angels meet up with Cup finalists The Oakville Angels, U-15 girl's rep team, played up an age group at Oakville's OSCAR Tournament over the Labour Day weekend to test their skills against older teams. After going undefeated through four round-robin games and the semifinal game, the Angels streak ended in the championship game. In one of their best games of the season, the Angels fell to the U-16 Dixie Hearts, who actually ended up as the Ontario Cup finalists in the U-17 division (losing 1-0 to St. Catharines Angels). After Dixie opened the scoring early on a scramble in front of the Angels' net, the Angels picked up their game and went toe to toe with Dixie, in an at times vicious affair, before tying it midway through the first half after Kara Lang redirected a free kick by Megann Vander Vliet. In the second half, the Angels took a 2-1 lead after Kara Lang pot ted her second, after great work by Stefanie Deboer and Courtney Cherrett resulted in chaos in front of the Dixie keeper. However, the Angels were unable to hold off the Hearts, who eventually picked up two more goals to register a hard fought 3-2 win and the tournament champi onship. Kara Lang picked up the MVP honours in a losing cause. The semifinals saw the Angels up against the North York Cosmos, and again an early goal by Kara Lang, heading it in after Megann Vander Vliet hit the crossbar, staked the Angels to a 1-0 lead. Kara Lang later added a second goal to finalize a 2-0 verdict. Kristine Snedden picked up the shutout (her third of the tournament). Game one of the tournament saw the Angels defeat the Oakville Strikers 6-1. Goals were scored by Jenna Sporta (2), Laura Richards, Carly Anderson, Stefanie Deboer and Megann Vander Vliet. In game two, the Angels blanked Mount Hamilton 3-0. Goals were scored by Kara Lang (2) and Carly Anderson. Game three saw the Angels struggle with Pelham before pick ing up two late goals to edge them 3-2. Megann Vander Vliet scored one with Kara Lang picking up the other two. In their fourth preliminary round game, in a battle of undefeat ed teams, Oakville won 3-0 over North Mississauga Strikers, another Ontario Cup finalist, in the U-16 division (who went on to lose the championship game 2-1 to Pickering Power). Goals were scored by Kara Lang (2) and Laura Richards. REGULAR SEASON Oakville defeated the visiting Sudbury Canadians on Sept. 16th, by a score of 3-1. Kara Lang notched the opening goal by con verting a Marisa Videc comer kick. Before the first half ended, Jenna Sporta found the top comer after a nice pass from Lauren Glover. Kara Lang extended the lead to 3-0 in the second half before Sudbury found the mark midway through the half. Earlier in the week, the Angels defeated Scarborough 3-2 in a see saw affair on a very sloppy Oakville field. After Scarborough opened the scoring early, Kara Lang scored two to put the Angels up 2-1. Scarborough then tied it up before Lang finished off the hat-trick with her third to put the Angels ahead to stay. A furious last 20 minutes saw the Angels held deep in their own end and while the Angels bent, they didn't break as Scarborough pulled out all of the stops in an attempt to tie the game.
