Friday October 13, 2000 Focus on Spirit KIDS SPEAK OUT School News days and fundraisers. This council is made up of grade 7 and 8 students who are inter ested in contributing to the community. Each of the members plays a role on the various committees. The Social Committee raises money for dances. The Publicity Committee informs the school about the successes of the Holy Family Hurricane teams. Very soon our school will be having a `Meet the Teacher' night. There will be a barbeque and an opportunity for parents and teachers to meet and enjoy some yummy barbeque eats, popcorn and candy. There will be face painting for the kids, a blaring sound system and a visit from the Oakville Fire Department. After the good ies, teachers and parents will meet and dis cuss student progress and the curriculum. Our School Council is a group of par ents and teachers who meet once a month to discuss the progress of the school. Each year they focus their attention on a new challenge. This year, our focus is on the topic of bullying. The main objective is to create a school environment where all stu dents can feel comfortable and safe. At Holy Family bullying is unacceptable behaviour. Holy Family has created an environ ment where we feel comfortable with teachers and classmates. Our clubs and teams have made us new friends and made everyone feel that school is a second home. THE OAKVILLE BEAVER 21 By Chantal Laurendeau and Leah Beamish Grade 8, Holy Family School Beep...beep...beep. Your roll out from under the covers and slam the alarm clock beside you! One question comes to mind: "Why am I up this early?' And then it hits you...you're back at school! For students, this is a dreaded and terri ble time. Children and teenagers are wor rying about all sorts of things ranging from who they have for a teacher, to fitting into new grades. But at Holy Family, there are so many different clubs and teams that each student has a place where they can feel welcome. So many activities go on through the school year. We have Volleyball, Basketball, Track and Field, Cross Country, Indoor Soccer, Student Council, Choir and the Holy Family Green team. We also have many Spirit Days during which we raise money for our school and our community. These spirit days are fun and important. They include Crazy Hair Day, Pajama Day, Hat Day, Twin Day, and Backwards Day. Great fun, great for school spirit. In a short while we will be collecting food for the Good Shepherd Food Drive. We gather non-perishable food to give to the less fortunate in order that they might have an enjoyable and healthy Thanksgiving dinner. Later this month our school will be par ticipating in a fund raising walk-a-thon in support of the D.A.R.E (Drug Abuse Resistance Education). This program helps students by educating them about drugs and introduces ways in which they can resist drug abuse. We will also partici pate in other charity events during the year.
