Although in a close battle for the lead during the early going against a runner from Cleveland, she used her superi or strength to control the race by mid-point, and pull away from the field over the last 200m. Having taken part in the International Children's Games at McMaster University in Hamilton last July, Athletiques International Track and Field Club is attempting to negoti ate an invitation to next year's Games, scheduled for Hungary. Based on this year's performance, tentative stan dards have been set for participation next year, with the girls 400m target being 1:03.0. In the long jump, she had a see-saw battle with the same Ohio athlete, before setting a PR. of 4.29m for her second gold of the meet. Pitkin also captured gold in the 100m (14.5s) and 800m (3:04.9 - PR.) In the peewee girls, five-year-old Nina Riddiford-Rossi was the dominant force, winning gold in the 60m (14.3s), 200m (50.7s), long jump (2.00m) and ball throw (5.93m) as well as silver in 100m (23.5s) to go away with five P.R.'s for the weekend. Candace Syme, 10, pulled a similar feat in the bantam girls division, winning the 60m (10.2s), 100m (17.2s), 200m (35.5s), and long jump (3.51m), as well as finishing third in the Midget javelin (8.18m). Kathryn Matheson, 13, did to the Youth girls 1500m what Pitkin>did to the 400m; burned off the competition early, and stretched out her lead to finish by herself, in a time of 5:52. In the 100m, she and Pitkin received the identical 14.5s time, but the judges placed her second. In the long jump, her 3.86m PR. placed her fourth. Malcolm Syme, 13, established a PR. of 1:09 in winning the Youth boys 400m, and came out on top in the long jump, squeaking out a narrow win at 4.55m. Matthew Jakubowicz, 15, hasn't jumped in three months, due to spending a summer in Europe, but still managed to tie his PR. in high jump, winning gold at 1.60m. Brandon Alderson nabbed a hat-trick in an 8-1 opening win over Windsor. Other goals were scored by Michael Scott (2), Braden Corbeth, Dylan Cooper and Scott Wilson. Assists went to Tyler Badham (2), Braden Corbeth (2), Wilson and Kyle Dube. Stellar goaltending by Jacob Liptok and Chris Miniaci backstopped the Rangers to a second-game 1-1 tie. Brandon Alderson scored Oakville's lone goal, assisted by Conrad Hansuld and Badham. Tyler Badham scored the only goal in a 4-1 loss to Markham Waxers. Nathaniel Domagala assisted. The offence got back on track in game four, spearheading a 5-3 win over Richmond Hill. Goals were scored by Braden Corbeth, Tyler Badham, Dylan Cooper, Brandon Alderson and Scott Wilson. Scott Wilson provid ed the lone marker, unassisted. ... the Oakville Hornets atom BB rep team The Oakville Hornets atom BB girls rep hockey team, sponsored by Meray Motors and Halton Signs, kicked off the new season in fine style, earning a silver medal in an early season tournament in Oshawa. The girls played four solid round robin games, emerging with a 2-1-1 record. Goal scorers in the round robin were Kaitlyn Wheeler (2), Taylor Metcalf, Melanie Johnson, Laura Pendlebury, Justine Bernier, Sarah Curry, Melissa Kennedy and Brittany Court. Assists went to Taylor Metcalf (2), Melissa Kennedy (2), Caroline Davies, Sarah Curry and even goalie Jessica Toth. The Hornets solid round robin play earned them a birth in the gold medal game against the Whitby Wolves who had defeated Oakville 2-1 in the round robin. The Hornets started strong with goals by Meagan Cordeiro and Melissa Kennedy (assisted by Justine Bernier), out shooting Whitby 10-2 in the first period. Whitby fought back, finally taking a 3-2 lead at 8:18 of the third period. The Hornets, however, mounted their own comeback, tying the game with just over three minutes left in regulation play on a goal by Kaitlyn Wheeler (assisted by Laura Pendlebury) and the stage was set for an exciting finish.
