This October 25 marks the 2 5 ^ anniversary of the Oakville Seniors' Centre. Back in 1975, 300 people gathered for the official opening of the new facility, which was built on the site of the former Ortona Barracks on Kerr Street Designed as a drop-in setting for Oakville' s seniors, the Centre has evolved into a multi-purpose facility with over one thousand members. Today the Centre offers classes in Tai Chi, Fitness, Yoga, Clogging, Spanish and Crafts to name just a few. The Centre also holds information sessions on current topics, runs special events, wellness clinics, day trips and tours to exciting destinations. A Town of Oakville, Parks and Recreation Facility, the Centre is managed by two full time staff, Nancy Beddoe and Diana Lean ski along with a number of part-time instructors and many dedicated volunteers. "We rely on our wonderful volunteers," says Beddoe, the Center Co-ordinator for the past 10 years. "They do every thing from working at the front reception desk to serving refreshments in the kitchen, making crafts for our annual fundraising sale or sitting on boards and committees. Together we make a great team!" Charter Member Greta Tribble who is also an instructor of various craft classes has this to say, "The Centre is a great place to meet people, members are welcoming and offer great support. It's a great place to catch up with old and new friends."
