Construction on the new school is slat ed to begin later this fall, with an official opening anticipated for September 2001. The school, to be built on Caldwell Drive in the River Oaks area, has been identified as "Site 011" in the Board's Capital Strategic Plan. This school will help address the growth occurring in north Oakville. The tender submitted by Aquicon Construction Company Inc., and approved by the Halton District School Board was for $7,337,000. With architects' fees, taxes, furniture and equipment, as well as contingencies, the budget approved by the Halton District School Board totals $8,799,797, and will be financed through the issuance of long term debt in accordance with the Capital Strategic Plan. "This is one of the first steps in address ing our long-range accommodation needs, according to the Capital Strategic Plan," said Ethel Gardiner, Chair of the Halton District School Board. "Many areas within the Region of Halton are experiencing rapid growth, and those have been identi fied in the Capital Strategic Plan. The con struction of this new. school is the first of many we will see throughout Halton, as the plan has indicated the need for 41 new schools during the next 20 years." In awarding the tender for the construc tion on Site 011, the Board was then able to relinquish the other site in the area (identi fied at 09). Also at the meeting, the Board approved a motion to 'inform the owner and the town of Oakville that the site known as River Oaks 09 is no longer required to be held for institutional use. Official ground-breaking ceremonies for the Site 011/Caldwell Drive school are being planned, and will be shared with the community as soon as possible.
