4 Oakville Beaver W eekend Sunday October 22,2000 High-needs students costing Board $500,000 per year B y D e n n is S m ith SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Paperwork required for special needs students costs more than $500,000 per year, public school trustees have been told. "This doesn't include class time lost for vulnerable and needy students," said superintendent Brenda Kearney. "It's because (supervisory) officers are needed to do paperwork that the time is lost" Kearney's observations came during an ISA (Individualized Student Application) cost analysis she provid ed at Wednesday's Halton District School Board meeting. The applications are required to obtain funds for high needs students from the lump sum the board receives annually. "The paperwork generated by the applications is extremely time-consuming," Kearney said after the meeting. "Report T h ree p o rta b le classroom s should ease OTHS crowding There should be a little more breathing room at Oakville Trafalgar High School by next Friday (Oct. 27th). T hree portables for OTHS are arriving this week, the Halton District School Board was told Wednesday. "The work to construct and hook them up should be com pleted in another week," said education direc tor Dusty Papke. He said building permit approval tim e, originally estim ated at four months, was moved up following a meeting with Oakville Mayor Ann Mulvale. Papke said boundary changes con sidered for the overcrow ded high school have been taken off the table. "We're not moving students and that's good news," he said. /-- the----------------- cards and timetables are required and the ministry of education keeps changing the process for its applications." This means officers have to start over again with applica tions, instead of using data collected the previous year, said the student services superintendent. Milton trustee Erica Andrew noted the cost estimate repre sents salaries paid to staff not in the classroom. "The $500,000 represents money for special services per sonnel like psychologists, speech pathologists and others," said Kearney. "It's 1,500 person days lost from the classroom and it takes an army of people to do those things." She said a Supervisory Officers Paper is being prepared by school boards to identify issues and make recommendations for improvements during the next 3-5 years. It will be sent to the education ministry. Board chair Ethel Gardiner said the cost is `quite stagger ing' and indicates problems with the provincial funding for mula. "And moving supervisors out of class, you can't put a cost on that," she said. Sleep Factory "CANADA' S MATTRESS SUPERSTORE" ) PAYMENTS 0 INTEREST FOR BE IN CHARGE OF YOUR CAREER!
